| System requirements to create a bootable CD |
Make sure that you have the following items before you continue:
- A CD-R or CD-RW drive
- CD authoring software, such as Toast
- The original Mac OS System Install disk that came with your Macintosh
- Your Symantec Macintosh software, such as Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks
- A blank recordable CD
There are three main steps to create a bootable CD for your Symantec product for Macintosh:
- Create an image of your Mac OS System Install disk
- Copy your Symantec product to the CD image
- Burn the image to a recordable CD

Create an image of your Mac OS System Install disk |

- Insert the System Install CD that came with your Macintosh into the drive.
|

- Open your hard drive, and then open the Utilities folder.
- If you have OS 9 or later, the Utilities folder is in the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder.

- On the Image menu, click Create Image from Disk.

- Select your System Install CD.

- Click Choose.

- In the "Save disk image as" window, in the Name field, type a name for your CD.

- In the Format list, select Read/Write, and then click Save.
- The CD image is created and saved to the Desktop.

- Eject the System Install CD and put it away.

Expand the section that describes how you purchased your Symantec product:

- Double-click the CD image that you created.
- The window for the CD image opens with the contents of the Mac OS System Install disk.

- Insert the Norton SystemWorks or Norton Utilities CD into your computer.

If you have the Norton SystemWorks CD, then open the Norton SystemWorks Folder on the CD. | |

- In the Norton product CD window, drag the Norton Utilities folder from the CD and drop it in the open window for the CD image that you created.
- The Norton Utilities folder is copied to the CD image.

- Eject the Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks CD, and put it away.

- Open Disk Copy, and on the Image menu, click Mount Image.
|

- Select the CD image that you created.
|
- 3
- Click Open.
- A new CD image appears with the same name minus the .img extension.

- Double-click the new CD image without the .img extension.
- The window for the CD image opens and displays the contents of the Mac OS 9 Install disk.

- Open your hard drive, then open the Norton Utilities folder.

- Drag the Norton Tools folder into the open window for the CD image that you created.
- The Norton Tools folder is copied to the CD image.

- Open the System Folder on the drive on which you installed Norton Utilities.

- Open the Extensions folder.

- Drag Norton Shared Lib into the Norton Tools folder, which is located in the window for the CD image that you created.

Burn the image to a recordable CD |
|
|
Use Toast or a similar CD-mastering program to burn the CD image that you created onto a recordable CD. For steps on how to burn a CD from a CD image, please refer to the documentation for the CD mastering program that you use.
You should now be able to boot your Macintosh from your custom CD and use Norton Utilities to scan, repair, or optimize your hard drive.
