How to remove FileSaver disk protection data files
Situation:
You see an error message, which says that your FileSaver files are damaged, or you want to remove the FileSaver data files for some other reason.
Solution:
FileSaver writes its information in four files:
- Norton FS Volume
- Norton FS Volume 2
- Norton FS Data
- Norton FS Index
If one of these files becomes damaged, FileSaver may report an error or your system may stop responding when attempting to update them. You can delete the files so FileSaver can recreate them from scratch. Since the files are invisible, you'll need to use a program that can see invisible files in order to remove them.
To remove these files using Fast Find that is included with Norton Utilities
NOTE: If you are using Mac OS X then boot from your Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks CD and use Fast Find. Fast Find is in the Norton Tools Folder located in the Norton Utilities folder.
- Launch Fast Find from the CD, or the Apple Menu.
- Select the volume from which you want to delete the FileSaver files. Type Norton FS as the search string.
- Click the running man button to start the search.
- Select the resulting Norton FS files. You can use the Shift key to select multiple files.
- From the File menu, click "Move... to Trash." The files will be moved to the Trash. Because they are invisible, the Trash will not bulge. The files will be deleted the next time you empty the Trash.
NOTE: Be sure FileSaver is active and protecting your computer when you are finished.
To remove these files using Find in Mac OS X:
NOTE: These steps do not remove Norton FS files on the start up disk, but only on a secondary hard disk. To remove the Norton FS files from your startup disk, start from another disk with Mac OS X installed and follow these steps.
- Click on the desktop to be sure you are in the Finder.
- Click the File menu, then "Find...".
- Click "Add criteria...", then choose "visibility".
- Choose "off" next to visibility.
- Type norton fs in the box next to "file name contains", as shown in the graphic below
NOTE: Choose Local disks next to "Search in:".

- Click Search. The Search Results window appears.

- Click the Edit menu, then Select All.
- Drag all the files to the Trash.
NOTE: If some of the files in the list are on your start up disk, an error message appears, saying that some items cannot be moved to the Trash. If this message appears, click OK.

NOTE: Ensure that FileSaver is active and protecting your computer when you are finished.
