Before you begin

If you are installing Norton SystemWorks that you downloaded from the Symantec Store, then read Installing Norton SystemWorks 2005 that was downloaded from the Symantec Store.

STEP 1		Prepare for installation
		1 Make sure that your computer meets the minimum installation requirements. These requirements are listed on your Norton SystemWorks product box. 2 To ensure a problem-free installation, read What to do before installing your 2005 Symantec product. 3 Uninstall any other antivirus programs that are installed. If you plan to include Norton AntiVirus as part of your installation of Norton SystemWorks, you must uninstall the other antivirus programs and restart your computer before you install Norton SystemWorks. To uninstall another antivirus program, read the user documentation for that program. 4 If you plan to install Norton GoBack, reserve space on your disk. During normal installation, up to 10 percent of your disk is allocated to Norton GoBack (up to 4 GB for Windows Me/98 and up to 8 GB for Windows XP/2000). In most cases 10 percent is sufficient disk space to provide an acceptable level of protection. This space if it is necessary to recover your disk drive. To allocate a different amount of disk space to Norton GoBack, perform a custom installation. As a general guideline, allocate more than 10 percent of your disk if the following conditions exist: Your computer has a relatively small disk drive (5 GB or less). You expect that typical usage will involve intensive disk write operations.

Note

If an earlier version of Norton GoBack is installed, including Norton GoBack Personal Edition, you must uninstall it before you install the 2005 version.

STEP 2		Install Norton SystemWorks 2005
		1 Exit all programs. 2 Insert the Norton SystemWorks 2005 CD into the drive. 3 In the Norton SystemWorks panel, click Install Norton SystemWorks. 4 In the Setup panel, click Next. 5 In the Licensing panel, read the License Agreement, and then click I accept the License Agreement. If you decline, you cannot continue the installation. 6 In the text boxes, type the product key, and then click Next. 7 In the PreInstall Scanner panel, click Start Scan to scan your computer. This scan takes only a short amount of time. 8 Do one of the following:    If you want to end the scan, click Stop Scan. If a virus is detected, click Delete for each file that you want to delete. 9 If you want to see the results of the scan, click View Details, and then click OK to exit. 10 Click Next. 11 Select an installation type: Install Now   This is the recommended option. All recommended features are installed. Custom   This option lets you change the features that are installed. It is recommended for advanced users. 12 To select a different installation folder, click Browse. 13 Click Next to begin installation. The Norton SystemWorks Setup panel displays installation progress. Depending on your computer system speed, installation can take several minutes. 14 Click Restart Windows Now (recommended) if you are asked to do so. 15 Click Finish.

STEP 3		Finish the installation
		You may need to restart your computer after you install Norton SystemWorks. After the computer restarts, the Configuration Wizard steps you through activation and registration, summarizes the installation settings, and completes the installation setup. The Configuration Wizard lets you review the Norton SystemWorks settings and complete registration and activation. You must be online to activate your product. If you choose not to register the software using the Configuration Wizard or if registration fails, you can register by using the Product Registration option on the Help menu or by using the Symantec Web site at www.symantec.com. 1 In the opening panel of the Configuration Wizard, click Next. 2 In the Product Activation panel, click Activate and register your product now. You must activate the software within 15 days. 3 Click Next. 4 In the first Registration panel, in the drop-down list, select the country or region from which you are registering. 5 If you want to receive information from Symantec about Norton SystemWorks, check the method by which you want to receive that information, and then type your email address or phone number. 6 Click Next. 7 Check if you want to receive postal mail from Symantec. 8 Type your name and address, and then click Next. 9 Click Next. 10 In the Activation panel, ensure that you are connected to the Internet, and then type the product key in the boxes. 11 Click Next. 12 In the Activation Complete panel, click Print key to print a copy of the product key for your records, and then click Next. 13 In the Norton SystemWorks Subscription panel, review your subscription information, and then click Next. 14 In the Thank You panel, review your configuration settings, and then click Close.

STEP 4		Install Norton GoBack (optional)
		The CD includes a separate installer for Norton GoBack. After you install Norton SystemWorks and restart your computer you can install GoBack. 1 Exit all programs. 2 Insert the CD into the drive. 3 In the Norton SystemWorks window, click Install Norton GoBack. 4 Read the Welcome message, and then click Next. 5 Read the License Agreement, and then click I accept the License Agreement. 6 Click Next. 7 To select a different installation folder, click Browse. 8 Select an installation type: Install Now   This is the recommended option. All recommended features are installed. Custom   This option is for advanced users. You can change the amount of space that is provided for your history files. You can also select other physical disk drives that you want to be protected by Norton GoBack. 9 To continue with the default installation settings, ensure that Express Installation is selected, then click Next. 10 When installation is complete, click Finish. The computer restarts and Norton GoBack is turned on. After you install Norton GoBack you may notice a slight increase in disk drive activity. This is normal and generally does not affect your computer's performance. 11 If you administer the computer, use Norton GoBack Options to set Administrator and User passwords after installation. These passwords are independent of Windows passwords and enable you to protect Norton GoBack features from unauthorized use.
