More integrated installation  The Norton SystemWorks 2004 installation has been redesigned to use a more integrated process that reduces potential installation problems. Wipe Free Space  Previously, the Wipe Free Space feature could be used only in Windows 98 and Windows Me. Norton SystemWorks 2004 and Norton SystemWorks Professional 2004 support this feature in Windows 98/Me/2000/XP. Performance Test The Performance Test benchmarks have been updated to reflect new hardware and software. Norton AntiVirus   Expanded threat detection: This detects specific types of nonvirus threats such as spyware and keystroke logging programs, and alerts you with suggestions for the appropriate action. This detection is included when Norton AntiVirus scans email, instant message attachments, or during scheduled or on-demand system scans to detect these threats at the point of entry to the system. Virus detection for compressed archives: This detects virus infections in compressed file archives even before you use the file. Checks all files that are downloaded from the Internet, including those from peer-to-peer networks running Windows 2000/XP, and from instant messenger services. Enhanced preinstall scanning: This detects viruses before you install Norton SystemWorks. New protection status feature: This keeps you informed when your virus definition set is out of date. Product activation Both NSW 2004 and NSW Professional 2004 require that you activate your copy of NSW. For more information, read the section "Installation and product activation." Where to find more online documentation Technical documentation for Norton SystemWorks and its component products is available online at the Symantec support Web page. You can find most of the online documentation for Norton SystemWorks 2004 by choosing Norton SystemWorks and then the version (2004 or 2004 Professional) on that page. Installation and product activation Norton SystemWorks 2004 and Norton SystemWorks Professional 2004 include an anti-piracy feature that requires you to activate your Norton SystemWorks installation. If you do not activate your purchased copy of Norton SystemWorks within 15 days, most of the Norton SystemWorks features are disabled and you cannot access those features until you activate the product. Upgrades and reinstallation Upgrades to the operating system Norton SystemWorks and its component products detect your current operating system during installation and install files and registry entries that are appropriate for use under that operating system. When you upgrade the operating system, such as from Windows 98 to Windows XP, some of the installed files and registry entries are no longer appropriate, and Norton SystemWorks might not function correctly. To prevent these problems, uninstall Norton SystemWorks before upgrading to a different operating system, and then install Norton SystemWorks after upgrading. Upgrades to Norton SystemWorks Norton SystemWorks does not include features that enable you to upgrade one version of Norton SystemWorks to a later version. Before installing Norton SystemWorks, uninstall all previous Norton SystemWorks versions. Reinstallations Norton SystemWorks cannot be installed over an existing Norton SystemWorks installation. If you plan to reinstall Norton SystemWorks, uninstall Norton SystemWorks first. Hard disk repair, virus removal, and file recovery If you purchased Norton SystemWorks to remove a virus, recover a deleted file or to fix other computer problems, do not immediately install Norton SystemWorks. Instead, run the virus scanner or repair tools from the Norton SystemWorks CD. For more information, read the document that is appropriate to your situation:   How to remove a virus from your computer when Norton AntiVirus is not yet installed Which utilities can be run directly from the Norton SystemWorks 2001, 2002, 2003, or 2004 CD?    Do not install programs to a computer that you suspect has a virus or to a computer that appears to be unstable. Doing so can make the problems worse. Instead, ensure that the computer is stable before installing Norton SystemWorks or other programs.
