Scanning for Internet-enabled programs in Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall

NOTE Note Symantec recommends running a Program Scan. If you do not run a Program Scan, then each time that an Internet-enabled program tries to access the Internet, a security alert appears.

Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall, click the statement that best describes what you see, and follow those instructions:

STEP 1
   Print this document

STEP 2
   Log on with a Norton Internet Security Supervisor account

Start Norton Internet Security.

In the Norton Internet Security dialog box, in the left pane, click User Accounts.

The type of account that you are logged on as is given after "You are logged on as:"
  • If you are logged on as "Supervisor,"  go to "STEP 3:  Remove the program rules and run a program scan."
  • If you are not logged on as "Supervisor," go to line 4 of this STEP.

Click Log Off.

If you are asked to confirm, click Yes.

Click Log On.

In the Account Name field, select Supervisor.

In the Password field, type your password.
If you have never assigned a password to the Supervisor account, leave this field blank.

Click OK.

You should see the following text: "You are logged on as: Supervisor."
STEP 3
   Remove the program rules and run a program scan

In the left pane click Status & Settings.

Click Personal Firewall.

Click Configure.

Click the Programs tab, do one of the following, depending on what you see:
  • If the Manual Program Control list contains a list of program, then click one of the rules and press Ctrl+A on the keyboard.
  • If the Manual Program Control list does not contain a list of programs, click Program Scan and go to line 8.

Click Remove.

Answer Yes to each of the two dialog boxes as they appear.

After the program rules are removed, click Program Scan.

In the Program Scan dialog box, check the box next to each of the hard drives and partitions that are listed. Click Next.

The scan progress is displayed. The scan may take up to 10 minutes to complete.

After the Program Scan finishes, click Check All.

Click Next.

In the final Program Scan window, click Finish.

Click OK to close the Personal Firewall Configuration dialog box.

Click Configure.

  • If the Manual Program Control list does not contain a list of programs, click Program Scan and go to line 8.

Click Remove.
