Situation:
You noticed the Alert Tracker on the lower right edge of your desktop and want to know more about it.
Solution:
The Alert Tracker is an instant notification feature of NIS and NPF that appears as a half-globe
on the lower right edge of your desktop. The Alert Tracker displays information about events as they happen. This way, when a rule has been triggered or an access to the Internet made, you know about it immediately rather than finding out about it hours or even days later when you happen to check your logs or notice that the NIS icon indicates a security alert. You can move this icon anywhere on the right or left margins of the desktop, or you can hide it entirely if you do not want to use it.
For more information about the events that trigger an alert, see the document How to handle alerts with Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2003.
When an event triggers the Alert Tracker, it pops out with information about the event:

In this example, the Tracker indicates that Internet Explorer accessed the Internet. The alert remains on the screen for a few seconds and then recedes back to the margin of the desktop.
- To view the alert again, double-click the half-globe icon and the Tracker pops out.

Note that the Alert Tracker includes the Ad Trashcan when you are using NIS.
To see more information about the event, click the alert pane

and the event log opens on the log entry for that event. The screen provided describes when and what caused the alert. In most cases, the alert is informational and you do not need to take any action.

NOTE: The Event Log can also be viewed by doing the following:
- Open NIS or NPF.
- Click Options.
- Click Internet Security or Personal Firewall. This step may not be required.
- Click View Event Log.
The Alert Tracker maintains a list of up to six events. After the sixth event, the Tracker updates itself to show the last six events it recorded.
- To look at the list of alerts:
- Double-click the Tracker icon to pop it out.
- Click the double-arrows to expand the alert list.

The Alert Tracker continues to record events until it is turned off. You can turn off the Alert Tracker in the following ways:
- Disable NIS/NPF
- Hide the Alert Tracker
To hide the Alert Tracker Globe:
- Click the NIS or NPF Globe located in the System Tray.
- Click Hide Alert Tracker.
OR
- Open NIS or NPF.
- Click Options.
- Select Internet Security or Personal Firewall.
- Choose the General tab.
- Remove the checkmark from Show the Alert Tracker.
- Click OK.
To show the Alert Tracker Globe:
- Click the NIS or NPF Globe located in the System Tray.
- Click Show Alert Tracker.
OR
- Open NIS or NPF.
- Click Options.
- Select Internet Security or Personal Firewall.
- Choose the General tab.
- Click Show the Alert Tracker so a checkmark appears in the box.
- Click OK.
Modifying or creating rules that report to the Alert Tracker
You can modify existing rules to either report to the Alert Tracker or to stop them from reporting.
You can configure new rules in the same way.
For details on creating rules, see the document
How to add a firewall rule to Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
For details on modifying existing rules, see the document
How to modify firewall rules.
