Situation:
Microsoft Windows and Office updates do not work after installing Norton Internet Security( NIS). While trying to install the Windows Update, the following error message appears, "Thank you for your interest in Windows Update. The Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer. You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update." When NIS is disabled, both updates work fine.
Solution:
The cause of this error is a conflict between the Windows update process and NIS. To solve this problem, allow Windows Update full access to your computer by configuring NIS to permit all content from the microsoft.com domain.
Click the icon next to the version of Norton Internet Security that you have installed to either expand ( ) or collapse (
) each section.
Norton Internet Security 2004
Norton Internet Security 2003
Windows Update should now work.
Alternate workaround
If the above solution does not work for you, as a workaround disable NIS, run Windows Update and install Office updates, and then enable NIS. If this workaround does not work for you, uninstall NIS, run the Windows Update and install Office updates, and then reinstall NIS.
