Error 1722: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package . . . " when installing Norton Internet Security

  Choose your operating system
 
 
I have Windows 98
STEP 1
  Register Wintrust.dll

Click Start > Run.

Type the following and press Enter:
        
Regsvr32 wintrust.dll

Click OK at the next prompt.
STEP 2
  Manually remove corrupted Microsoft® installer files

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.

On the View menu, click Folder Options.

On the View tab, in the Advanced Settings pane, under Files and Folders, verify that Hide file extensions for known file types is unchecked.

In the Advanced settings dialog box, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show all files.

Click Apply > Like Current Folder or Apply to all folders.

Click OK.

Browse the following folder:
 
C:\Windows\Installer

In this folder, find the file with .msi extension.

Click Properties > Summary.
10
If either the Subject or Author fields contains a reference to Norton or Symantec, click OK.

Click Delete.

Do one of the following:
 
  • If there are no more files with the .msi extension then reinstall Norton Internet Security.
  • If there are other files with the .msi extension, repeat these lines 8 to 11 for each file with the .msi extension.


What if this didn't work?
I have Windows ME/XP
STEP 1
  Register Wintrust.dll

Click Start > Run.
