		Virus definitions
		Run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the most recent virus definition and program updates. Virus definitions are updated weekly and whenever a fast spreading threat is discovered. For information on how to run LiveUpdate, see the document How to run LiveUpdate. You cannot receive the latest virus definitions if your security update subscription is not current. You will know that your subscription is out of date, if, when you run LiveUpate, you are not able to download the virus definitions. If this is the case, read How to renew the subscription for your Norton product. By default, Norton AntiVirus is configured to automatically download virus definitions when you are connected to the Internet. If the program is disabled for any reason, then follow these steps to reenable the feature.  How to enable Automatic LiveUpdate 1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program. 2 Click Options. If a submenu appears, then click Norton AntiVirus. 3 In the left list box, click LiveUpdate. 4 Check Enable Automatic LiveUpdate (recommended). 5 Click Apply updates automatically without interrupting me (recommended). 6 Click OK.

		Startup Scan (Windows 98 only)
		Startup scanning is designed to scan for viruses when you turn on the computer. (The startup scan is only available on Windows 98.) Follow these steps to enable the startup scan.  How to turn on the startup scan 1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program. 2 Click Options. If a submenu appears, then click Norton AntiVirus. 3 Under Other, click Miscellaneous. 4 Under What to do at system startup, check Scan system files at startup. 5 Click OK.

		Auto-Protect
		Auto-Protect is designed to scan for viruses when files are opened, moved, created, or downloaded. Follow the instructions that apply to your version of Norton AntiVirus to configure Auto-Protect for maximum protection. Auto-Protect is on by default in Norton AntiVirus.  How to turn on Auto-Protect 1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program. 2 Click Options. If a submenu appears, then click Norton AntiVirus. 3 Click Auto-Protect. 4 Check Start Auto-Protect when Windows starts up (recommended). 5 Under Which file types to scan, check Comprehensive file scanning. 6 In the left list box, click Advanced. 7 Under What activities to monitor when using floppy disks, check Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down. 8 If your computer has two floppy disk drives, then check Scan both drives A: and B:. 9 Click OK.

		Script Blocking (Norton AntiVirus 2003/2004/2005 only)
		A script is a program that is written with a scripting language, such as Visual Basic Script or JavaScript, and can be executed without user interaction. Scripts can be opened with text editors or word processing programs, so that they are very easy to change. Scripts can be used when you log on to the Internet, or check your email. Restarting your computer involves using scripts that tell your computer what programs to load and run. A script can also be written to perform malicious activities when it is launched. You can unknowingly receive a malicious script by opening an infected document or email attachment, viewing an infected HTML email message, or visiting an infected Internet Web site. Script Blocking detects Visual Basic and JavaScript viruses without the need for specific virus definitions. It monitors the scripts for virus-like activity and in most cases you receive an alert telling you that a potential threat was found. Script Blocking is on by default in Norton AntiVirus. Follow these steps to check if it is running and to enable the feature if it is not.  How to enable Script Blocking 1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program. 2 Click Options. If a submenu appears, then click Norton AntiVirus. 3 In the left pane, click Script Blocking. 4 In the right pane, if the entry is not checked, then check Enable Script Blocking (recommended). 5 Click Ask me what to do (recommended). 6 Click OK.

		Instant Messenger file download scan
		The Instant Messenger (IM) scanner is enabled automatically if one of the following IM programs is installed before you install Norton AntiVirus. AOL Instant Messenger, version 4.7 or later Yahoo Instant Messenger, version 5.0 or later MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger, version 4.6 or later If you install one of these programs after Norton AntiVirus has been installed, then make sure that the Norton AntiVirus IM scanner has been enabled.  How to make sure that the Norton AntiVirus IM scanner has been enabled 1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program. 2 Click Options. If a submenu appears, then click Norton AntiVirus. 3 Click Instant Messenger. 4 Check the instant messenger program that you installed, and then click OK.

		Email scanning
		Email scanning is designed to scan incoming email for viruses, before it is written to the hard drive.  How to configure email scanning for maximum protection 1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program. 2 Click Options. If a submenu appears, then click Norton AntiVirus. 3 Click Email. 4 Under What to scan, check both Scan incoming Email and Scan outgoing Email. 5 Check Enable Worm Blocking. 6 Click OK.

		Manual scans
		Manual virus scans examine the hard drive for viruses. To configure manual virus scans for maximum protection, follow the instructions that apply to your version of Norton AntiVirus to move the bloodhound heuristics level to high and then scan the computer.  How to configure manual virus scans for maximum protection 1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program. 2 Click Options. If a submenu appears, then click Norton AntiVirus. 3 Click Manual Scan. 4 Under What items to scan in addition to files, check the following:   Memory (in Windows 98/Me only) Boot records Master boot records 5 Under File types to scan, click All files, and check Scan within compressed files. 6 In the left list box, click Bloodhound. 7 Check Enable Bloodhound heuristics (recommended). 8 Do one of the following depending on your situation:   If you suspect that your computer may be infected, then check Highest level of protection. Choosing the "Highest Level of Protection" may cause Norton AntiVirus to incorrectly report a virus. Symantec suggests that you use this setting only if you highly suspect that you have a virus. If Norton AntiVirus detects a virus only when heuristics is set at "Highest Level of Protection," then we suggest that you use Scan and Deliver to submit a virus sample to the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center. For instructions on using Scan and Deliver, see the document How to submit a file to Symantec Security Response using Scan and Deliver. If you do not suspect that your computer may be infected, check the middle setting "Default level of protection (recommended)." 9 Click OK.

		Scheduled scans
		Scheduled scans are designed to scan the hard drive for viruses at a predetermined time. The computer must be turned on at the scheduled time for a scheduled scan to occur. Norton AntiVirus is configured to run a weekly scan every Friday by default. If you have changed the default setting or you want to change the time or frequency of the scheduled scan, follow the steps in this section.  How to configure a scheduled scan for maximum protection in Norton AntiVirus 1 Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program. 2 Click Scan for Viruses. 3 Click Scan my computer. 4 Click the icon under Task Schedule. 5 Select the time and frequency for the scan. 6 Click OK.
