Cannot print from a DOS-based program after installing Norton AntiVirus
Situation:
After installing Norton AntiVirus, when you attempt to print from a DOS-based application that is running in a DOS windows, nothing is printed or you see one of the following errors:
- Fatal Exception 0E occurred at 0028:xxxxxxx in module...
- <Program name> caused an Invalid Page Fault in module. . .
- The <Program name> has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated.
In some cases, if Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect is disabled, then the DOS-based application prints as expected.
Solution:
There are three possible workarounds for this problem. Try each workaround in the order listed. If the first procedure does not fix the problem, go on to the next, and so on until the problem is fixed.
To disable "Spool MS-DOS print jobs" in printer properties
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Settings > Printers.
- In the list, right-click the printer, and then click Properties.
- On the Details tab, click Port Settings.
- Uncheck Spool MS-DOS print jobs.
- Click OK.
Try to print again. If this workaround did not fix the problem, then go to the next section.
To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking
- Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
- Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
- In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
- In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
- Click OK.
Try to print again. If this workaround did not fix the problem, then go to the next section.
To disable Auto-Protect, print the job, and then re-enable Auto-Protect
- Right-click the Norton AntiVirus icon in the Windows system tray.
- Click Disable Auto-Protect.
- Print the DOS-based print job.
- Right-click the Norton AntiVirus icon in the Windows system tray, and then click Enable Auto-Protect.
WARNING: Make sure that you re-enable Auto-Protect when you have finished printing. Your computer is not protected when Auto-Protect is disabled.
