Types of threats or security risks that Auto-Protect detects |
|
|
-
- The type of threat or security risk is named in the text of the alert. Auto-Protect detects virus, a Trojan horse or worm or another security risk, such as spyware or adware.

What to do with an infected file that is detected by Auto-Protect |
|
|
-
- In most cases, Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect 2006 automatically repairs virus-infected files or automatically deletes files that are infected by a worm or a Trojan. After a successful repair or deletion, Norton AntiVirus displays a dialog box to inform you of the detection and what action was taken.
- When you see this alert, if you have Internet access and want more information on the threat, click the virus name to go to Symantec Security Response.
- When Auto-Protect detects a security risk, such as spyware or adware, you are given information on the threat and help with deciding what to do.
- In the drop-down list, you have the following choices:
-
- Scan now (recommended)
Recommended choice. The computer is scanned for all entries that relate to the infected file. When the scan is finished, you are given the choice to exclude, remove, or ignore the threat.
- Exclude this risk from future scans
Choose this only if you are sure that you do not want the security risk to be removed.
- Ignore this risk for 30 minutes
Choose this if you are not sure about the program and do not want to exclude it yet.
- If you choose to remove the security risk, and later you realize that you need the removed program, you can restore it from Norton Quarantine and Restore.

If Auto-Protect cannot repair a file |
|
|
-
- If Auto-Protect cannot successfully repair a virus-infected file, then it attempts to delete the file. A successful deletion bypasses the Windows Recycle Bin and completely removes the file from the hard drive.
- If Auto-Protect cannot delete the file, then it denies access to the file to make sure that the file cannot infect the computer. For more information on why Norton AntiVirus denies access to a file, read the document What does it mean when Norton AntiVirus denies access to a file?
- Auto-Protect cannot repair, quarantine, or delete a file that is running in memory or that you do not have permission to access. But, in most cases, you can start Windows in Safe mode, run a manual scan for viruses, and then delete the infected files. To scan the computer in Safe mode, read the document Scanning for threats in Safe mode with Norton AntiVirus 2005/2006.

Note |
You must turn off the power for at least 30 seconds to remove the virus from memory. Do not use the reset button to start your computer in Safe mode. | | |
