Restoring security risks in Norton AntiVirus 2006

Situation:
Norton AntiVirus 2006 found and removed a security risk. You decide that the security risk is a program that you want. You want to know how to restore the program.

Solution:

Tutorial: This document has a tutorial that can help you with the steps. Just click the "show me these steps" button to begin the tutorial.

Some programs rely on other programs that are classified as "security risks," such as spyware and adware, in order to function. All removed security risks are automatically backed up by Norton Quarantine and Restore. If a program that you need stops working, you can restore the risk program in order to regain that function.

Note: If you restore any program to a directory other than its original location, it may not function properly.

To restore a security risk program from Norton Quarantine and Restore
  1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
  2. In the left pane, under Norton AntiVirus, click Reports.
  3. In the right pane, click View Norton Quarantine and Restore.
  4. In the left pane, click Security Risks.
  5. In the right pane, click the name of the risk program that you want to restore.
If you want more information about the risk, on the menu, click Details.
The Details panel helps you decide whether to restore the risk or not.
    • General: Provides a summary of the risk and a recommendation on what to do.
    • Risk Impact: Provides information on the impact the risk can have on your computer.
    • Affected Areas: Provides a list of the files and registry entries that were removed.
  6. If you decide to restore the risk, close Details and, on the menu, click Restore Item.
  7. In the warning dialog box, check Exclude item from future scan.
If you do not check this item, then Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect will detect the file when it is restored.
  8. Click Yes.
  9. If the Overwrite warning dialog box appears, click Yes.
  10. If the Save As dialog box appears, click Save.
  11. To see more information about the risk, in the Restore results dialog box, click Details.
  12. Click OK to complete the restore process.
