Cannot access the Internet after installing Norton AntiVirus 2005 or 2006

Because you must return to this page after you restart the computer, add this page to Favorites.

STEP 2
  Update your Norton Product

Many problems have been fixed in the latest Norton product update. If you have Norton AntiVirus 2006 installed in Windows XP with a valid subscription, then you are eligible for the latest product update. Click the button to update your Norton program.
UPDATE NOW

If you purchased your product through your Internet service provider (ISP), please be sure that you have the latest version available from your ISP. Run LiveUpdate to download and install the most recent updates.

If you do not want to update your Norton product, go to the next step.

STEP 3
  Temporarily turn off Internet Worm Protection

Start Norton AntiVirus
 If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks, then start that program.

Click Options > Norton AntiVirus.

In the left pane, click Internet Worm Protection.

In the right pane, uncheck Enable Internet Worm Protection.

Click Permanently.

Click OK.

Restart the computer.

STEP 4
  Test your Internet connection

Start Internet Explorer.

Go to any Internet page. For example:

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/index.html
 
  • If you cannot connect to the Internet, follow the instructions in STEP 5 to turn on Internet Worm Protection. Then contact your Internet service provider for help.
  • If you can connect to the Internet, go on to STEP 5.

STEP 5
  Turn on Internet Worm Protection

Start Norton AntiVirus
 If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks, then start that program.

Click Options > Norton AntiVirus.

In the left pane, click Internet Worm Protection.

In the right pane, check Enable Internet Worm Protection.

Click OK.

Restart the computer. 

STEP 6
  Check an Internet Explorer setting

Start Internet Explorer.

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

On the Advanced tab, scroll down to HTTP 1.1 settings.

Check Use HTTP 1.1.

Check Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.

Click OK.

Exit Internet Explorer.

STEP 7
  Remove items from the Program Control list

Start Norton AntiVirus
 If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks, then start that program.

Click Options > Norton AntiVirus.

In the left pane, click Internet Worm Protection.

In the right pane, click Program Control.

Click the first program in the list.

Press Ctrl+A to select all items in the list.

Click Remove.

Click OK.
9
Test your Internet connection.
