Error: "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error (3009,0)" when installing Norton AntiVirus 2004

STEP 1

STEP 2
  Download the Microsoft security MS-Hotfix (KB828741) file to your computer

Click the button to download Microsoft security MS-Hotfix (KB828741) file. DOWNLOAD

When you get to the page, locate Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1.

Click Download the update.

On the next page, click Download.

Click Save.

In the Save in: line, click the drop-down menu and click Desktop.

Click Save.

Click Close when the download is finished.
STEP 3
  Disconnect from the Internet
During this process your computer is vulnerable. To protect your computer, disconnect from the Internet. To do this, do one of the following: 
  • If you have a dialup connection, and you are connected to the Internet, then disconnect.
  • If you have a high speed connection (such as DSL or cable) that is always on, then you must either turn off or unplug your high speed modem.
STEP 4
  Uninstall Norton AntiVirus
Warning Warning Before you continue, make sure that you have the installation CDs or downloaded installation files for any Norton products that you want to reinstall.

Click Start > Control Panel.

Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

Click the product that you want to uninstall: 
  • If Norton AntiVirus was installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then uninstall that program.
  • If you have Norton AntiVirus 2004, click Norton AntiVirus 2004 (Symantec Corporation) or Norton AntiVirus 2004 Professional (Symantec Corporation).

Click Add/Remove, Change/Remove, Remove or Change (this varies with the operating system), and follow the prompts.

Restart the computer if you are asked to do so.
STEP 5
  Uninstall the Microsoft RPC/DCOM security update

Click Start > Control Panel.

Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

In the Currently installed window, click Windows Hotfix - KB828741.

Click Add/Remove, Change/Remove, Remove or Change (this varies with the operating system), and follow the prompts.
 If the uninstallation fails, you must contact your computer manufacturer for help removing the security update.

Restart the computer if you are asked to do so.
STEP 6
  Reinstall your Norton products

Choose the statement that best describes your situation:

I have the product on a CD

Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.

Click Install Product Name, where Product Name is the name of your Norton product.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

I downloaded the product from the Symantec Store and still have the installation file

Find the product installation file. Unless you saved it elsewhere, it is on the Windows desktop.

Double-click the installation file.
 Wait for the installation wizard to appear—it may take a minute or two.

Click Install Product Name, where Product Name is the name of your Norton product.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

I downloaded the product from the Symantec Store and no longer have the installation file

Go to the Symantec Store Order Status Web page.

Type in your order number and password to log on, and you will see your order information.
If you do not know your order number and password, you can look up your order using your email address.

On your Order Summary, click Start Download.
NOTE Note
  • If you purchased your product more than 60 days ago, you can click Buy Now to buy the Extended Download Service and download the product again.
  • If you purchased your product more than a year ago, you cannot download your product anymore. You can buy a new version of your product at a discounted price by purchasing an upgrade. Go to our Upgrades and Renewals page, then choose your product and version to see your upgrade options.

The product came pre-installed on my computer

Reinstall your Norton product from the back-up CD that came with your computer.

If you do not have the back-up CD or are not sure how to use it, please contact your computer manufacturer for help.

I downloaded the product from my Internet service provider (ISP)

Find the product installation file.
If you no longer have the installation file, download it again from your ISP.

Double-click the installation file.
 Wait for the installation wizard to appear—it may take a minute or two.

Click Install Product Name, where Product Name is the name of your Norton product.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

STEP 7
  Reinstall the Microsoft RPC/DCOM security update

On the Windows desktop, double-click Windows version -KB828741-x86-ENU.Exe.
 Where version is the abbreviation for your version of Windows. For example, if you have Windows XP, the file will be named "WindowsXP-KB828741-x86-ENU.Exe."

Follow the prompts to install the security update.

Restart the computer when you are asked to do so.

At this point, you can reconnect your computer to the Internet. If you turned off or unplugged your high speed modem, then turn it back on or plug it back in. If you have a dialup connection, then connect to the Internet.
