Frequently asked questions about Norton AntiVirus Email Scanning

  Frequently asked questions

What is Email Scanning?
Norton AntiVirus Email Scanning verifies that email and attachments are free from viruses and other malicious code as you download them from your Internet service provider (ISP). NOTE Note Run LiveUpdate at least once each week to keep your virus protection current.

Is it possible to turn off the Outgoing Email Scanning dialog box that is displayed when Norton AntiVirus scans an outgoing email?
Yes, the most recent Norton AntiVirus 2003 program update adds the Option to turn off this dialog box. This Option appears by default in Norton AntiVirus 2004. Click here for information about the dialog box and how to disable it.
What does "OE has removed a potentially harmful attachment" mean?

Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning?
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.
