Scanning for viruses using current virus definitions and the Norton AntiVirus CD, Emergency Disks, or Rescue Disks

  Download and run Intelligent Updater
 
I can connect to Internet
STEP 1
  Create a vdefs folder on your computer

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.

Click drive C.

On the File menu, click New > Folder.

In the new folder that appears, type the following text:
 
vdefs

Press Enter.
 
STEP 2
  Download the virus definitions to your computer

Go to the updates page for new virus definitions. DOWNLOAD DEFINITIONS

Click the first file in the list under Filename.
The file name starts with the year and has the following format:
 
20060718-018-i32.exe

Save the file to the Windows desktop.

On the desktop, double-click the file that you saved.
STEP 3
  Copy the virus definitions to the vdefs folder

On the Windows desktop, click Start > Run.

Type the following text:
 
command

Press Enter.

When the DOS window opens, type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:
 
cd\vdefs
 
C:\vdefs\<name of .exe file> /dump
 <name of .exe file> is the .exe file that you wrote down in the previous section.
 For example, if you downloaded 20040525-018-i32.exe., then type the following:
 
C:\vdefs\20040525-0018-i32.exe  /dump

When the extraction finishes, click OK at the message "/EXTRACT command successfully completed."
I cannot connect to Internet
STEP 1
  Create a vdefs folder on your computer

STEP 2
  Download the virus definitions to your computer

If you cannot connect to the Internet, then go to an uninfected computer and download the virus definitions to four floppy disks.

Go to the updates page for new virus definitions. DOWNLOAD DEFINITIONS

Click the first file in the list under Filename.
The file name starts with the year and has the following format:
 
20060718-018-i32.exe

Save the file to the Windows desktop.

In your computer infected with virus, copy the contents of each floppy disk to C:\vdefs

Write down the name of the .exe file that you download.
 (for example 20040525-018-i32.exe).
STEP 3
  Copy the virus definitions to the vdefs folder

On the Windows desktop, click Start > Run.

Type the following text:
 
command

Press Enter.

When the DOS window opens, type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:
 
cd\vdefs
 
C:\vdefs\<name of .exe file> /dump
 <name of .exe file> is the .exe file that you wrote down in the previous section.
 For example, if you downloaded 20040525-018-i32.exe., then type the following:
 
C:\vdefs\20040525-0018-i32.exe  /dump

STEP 3
  Scan your computer
 
Scan for viruses using the Norton AntiVirus installation CD

Insert the Norton AntiVirus installation CD in the CD-ROM drive, close all open programs, and then shut down the computer.

Wait thirty seconds, and then restart the computer.

On the opening menu, press Ctrl+C to leave you at the A prompt.

At the A:\> prompt, type the following, and then press Enter:
 
navdx /l /doallfiles /prompt /cfg:c:\vdefs

Norton AntiVirus will scan the hard drive using the updated virus definitions. The scan will take a long time. You will be prompted when an infected file is found. Press R to repair. If the repair is unsuccessful, then press D to delete the file.
Scanning for viruses using the Emergency Disks

Follow the instructions in Creating Norton AntiVirus Emergency Disks to create an Emergency Disk set.

Insert the Norton AntiVirus Emergency Disk #1 into the floppy drive, and then turn off the computer.

Wait thirty seconds, and then restart the computer.

Remove the current value in the command line at the bottom of the screen by backspacing over the text.

Type the following, and then press Enter:
 
navdx /l /doallfiles /prompt /cfg:c:\vdefs

When prompted to insert another disk, insert the disk that the dialog box requests, and click OK.

The virus scan will scan the hard drive using the updated virus definitions. The scan will take a long time. You will be prompted when an infected file is found. Press R to repair. If the repair is unsuccessful, then press D to delete the file.
Scanning for viruses using the Rescue Disks (Norton AntiVirus 2004 and earlier only)

If you have created a Norton AntiVirus Rescue disk set, then go on to line 3.

If you have not created a Rescue Disk set, then create the Rescue Disks on an uninfected computer by following the steps in Creating a Norton AntiVirus Rescue Disk set on an uninfected computer to scan an infected computer.

Insert disk 1 from the Norton AntiVirus Rescue Disk set, and then turn off the computer.

Wait thirty seconds, and then restart the computer.

What you do next depends on whether the Rescue Disks were created on a computer using the same version or a different version of Windows
 
  • Rescue disks created on a computer with the same version of Windows: Go to the section "I have created Rescue Disks on the same version of Windows."

  • Rescue disks created on a computer with a different version of Windows: Go to the section "I have created Rescue Disks on a different version of Windows."

I have created Rescue Disks on the same version of Windows

If the Rescue Disks were created on a computer using the same version of Windows as your computer, then highlight "Norton AntiVirus" from the menu on the screen and remove the current value in the command line at the bottom of the screen by backspacing over the text.

Type the following, and then press Enter:
 
navdx /l /doallfiles /prompt /cfg:c:\vdefs

The virus scan will scan the hard drive using the updated virus definitions. The scan will take a long time. You will be prompted when an infected file is found. Press R to repair. If the repair is unsuccessful, then press D to delete the file.
I have created Rescue Disks on a different version of Windows

You will see the following warning message:
 
Warning: Your computer does not match this Rescue disk set. Rescue disks can only be used on the computer for which they were created. If you run Rescue on this computer, you may cause irreparable damage to your files.
Are you sure you want to run Rescue on this computer [Y,N]?

Choose No at this prompt by pressing N on your keyboard.
 
Warning Warning Remember to choose No. If you choose Yes, then the system files for your computer will be overwritten and you will not be able to start the computer.
 You will then see the following message:
 
Remove the floppy disk from the drive and reboot your computer.

Remove the floppy disk from the drive but do not reboot the computer.
 
Warning Warning Do not reboot the computer. If you reboot the computer then the system files for your computer will be overwritten and you will not be able to start the computer.

Insert disk 2 from the Rescue Disk set into the floppy drive.

At the A:\> command prompt, type the following, and then press Enter:
 
navdx /l /doallfiles /prompt /cfg:c:\vdefs

The virus scan will scan the hard drive using the updated virus definitions. The scan will take a long time. You will be prompted when an infected file is found. Press R to repair. If the repair is unsuccessful, then press D to delete the file.
