You are notified that you sent an infected email when you sent none

If you are receiving undeliverable email notices or someone claims that your computer is infected, you should follow the steps in the next section to rule out a worm infection as the cause. Once you have ruled out an infection, then you can be confident that the email has been spoofed.

This solution requires that you use Internet Explorer. If this page is open in any other Web browser, open it in Internet Explorer.

I can run a virus scan using Norton Antivirus
STEP 1
  Run LiveUpdate
Run a tool to start LiveUpdate. RUN IT NOW
STEP 2
  Run full system scan

Open Norton Antivirus.

On the left panel, click on Scan for viruses.

Click Scan My Computer.

Follow the instructions on Scan window.

If scan finds the virus or threats then for most threats, you will see a link to information on the Security Response Web site.

If you do see a link, click it, and follow the steps in the Removal Instructions section. If more than one threat is detected, more than one link may be displayed.

If no threat is detected, your computer is not infected by a known threat. You can be confident that the email has been spoofed.
I cannot run a virus scan using Norton Antivirus
            
  Run an online virus scan

Click on the button to run an online virus scan. RUN IT NOW
 
  •  You may see a yellow bar at the top of the window with a message about ActiveX controls, click the bar and then click Install ActiveX control. When small box appears, click Install.
  • When you are asked if you want to run the software, be sure to click Run.

When the Security Check Web page opens, click GO.

When you are asked, always click START, Next, or Install.

Allow the scan to run. The scan can take thirty minutes or longer. Do not interrupt the scan.

Depending on the results, do one of the following:
 
  •  If any known threats were found, you must remove them by clicking the link to each threat and following the steps in the Removal Instructions section of the Security Response write-up.
  •  If no threat is detected, your computer is not infected by a known threat. You can be confident that the email has been spoofed.
