Error: "Cannot delete navshext.dll . . ." when deleting the Norton AntiVirus program folder

  Select your Norton product
 I am using Norton AntiVirus 2004
STEP 1
   Unregister the Navshext.dll file (for Windows 2000/XP only)

On the Windows desktop, click Start > Run.

Type or copy and paste the text that applies to your version of Norton AntiVirus:
 
  •  If Norton AntiVirus is installed as a stand-alone product:

    regsvr32 -u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\navshext.dll"
  • If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks:

    regsvr32 -u "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton antivirus\navshext.dll"
  • If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton Internet Security:

    regsvr32 -u "c:\program files\norton internet security\norton antivirus\navshext.dll"

Click OK at the next prompt.
STEP 2
   Rename Norton AntiVirus folder, restart the computer and delete the renamed Norton AntiVirus folder

Open Windows Explorer.

Navigate to the following folder:
 C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus

Right-click the Norton AntiVirus folder, and then click Rename.

Rename the folder to Nortonold, and then click outside of the name box.

Click Yes at the next prompt.

Close Windows Explorer and any other open applications, and then restart the computer.

After restarting, open Windows Explorer.

Navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Nortonold

Right-click Nortonold, and then click Delete.

Click Yes at the next prompt.
 I am using Norton AntiVirus 2003

STEP 1
   Save your Product Key

The Norton 2003 products do not have a product key.

Be sure that you have your product CD or installation file, then go to STEP 2 below.

If you do not have your product CD or installation file, and you have Windows XP, then we suggest that you upgrade to the latest version of your product. UPGRADE


STEP 2
   Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Warning Warning The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer. If you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases before you proceed.

Download the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
 
 Save the file to the Windows desktop.

On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.

Follow the on-screen instructions.
 Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
