Situation:
Norton AntiVirus detected a threat in a compressed file. The file could not be repaired, so you chose to quarantine the file. Now you want to submit it to Symantec Security Response, but when you try to do so, you see a message that the file is compressed and cannot be submitted in that format.

Solution:
Files submitted to Symantec Security Response from Norton AntiVirus Quarantine must be submitted in uncompressed format. However, to uncompress the file, it must first be restored to your hard drive. This could cause the computer to be infected. Because of this, it is important to know whether you need the infected, compressed file or not. Do the following, depending on whether the file is needed:

• If you do not need the compressed file: Follow the steps in the document Removing files from Norton AntiVirus Quarantine to delete the file.
• If the compressed file is needed: Go on to the next section.

1. Run LiveUpdate to download the latest virus definitions.
2. Follow the instructions in the document Restoring a file from Quarantine to restore the compressed file.
3. Use a zip utility to uncompress the file. There are many different zip programs that can be used to do this. Any of these programs will work. WinZip is one of those programs and is available at www.winzip.com.
4. After the compressed file is extracted, quarantine the unzipped files, and then resubmit the files to Symantec Security Response.
