Situation:
Your Internet service provider is America Online (AOL). When you enable the email scanning feature of Norton AntiVirus (NAV), you cannot check your email. You want to know whether it is possible to use third-party email programs, such as Eudora, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook, Netscape Mail, and Pegasus, to send and receive email through your AOL account.
Solution:
NAV was not designed to work with AOL's Secure Email system. The NAV email scanner cannot read the data provided from AOL's proprietary software. To send and receive AOL email, you must use the AOL software (an exception for Macintosh users is Claris Emailer.) You can also use AOL NetMail, which enables AOL members to check and send their AOL email from the Web.
Disable NAV's email scanner and be sure that Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect provides real-time virus protection from any source, including the Internet, and will automatically scan email attachments whenever they are accessed.
