Is Norton AntiVirus Email Scanning compatible with Web-based email?
Situation:
You want to know whether you can scan Web-based email, such as Hotmail or Yahoo, with Norton AntiVirus (NAV).
Solution:
NAV Email Scanning is not compatible with Web-based email programs. The email databases used by Web-based email services, such as Hotmail, Yahoo, Juno, and AOL, reside on a remote server. Email Scanning can only scan email messages that exist on the hard drive. Because of this, NAV Email Scanning cannot scan email for those Web-based email programs.
NOTES:
- Some Web-based email programs, such as Yahoo, may be configured to use a standard POP3 email program, such as Outlook Express. If you configure Yahoo in that way, then the email messages are downloaded to the hard drive, and NAV Email Scanning can scan the email. Contact technical support for your Web-based email service for information on how to configure the email program to use a standard POP 3 email program.
- NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.
