Some Internet-enabled programs can no longer access the Internet after installing Norton AntiVirus 2006 or 2005 version

STEP 2
  Update your Norton product

Many problems have been fixed in the latest Norton product update. If you have Norton AntiVirus 2006 installed in Windows XP with a valid subscription, then you are eligible for the latest product update. Click the button to update your Norton program.
UPDATE NOW

If you purchased your product through your internet service provider (ISP), please be sure that you have the latest version available from your ISP. Run LiveUpdate to download and install the most recent updates.

If you do not want to update your Norton product, go to the next step.

STEP 3
  Remove all existing program rules

Start Norton AntiVirus.
 If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.

Click on Options > Norton AntiVirus.

On the left pane, select Internet Worm Protection.

On the right pane, click Program Control.

If there are programs listed, then click the first program in the list.

Press CTRL+ A to highlight all items.

Click on Remove.

Click OK and Close Norton Antivirus.
 

STEP 4
  Create a new program rule

Start the software program that has the problem. This should generate a dialog box.

Do the following, depending on whether you see the dialog box or not:
 
  • If you do not see the dialog box: Skip to the section "To add a new program rule using the Add button" in the Technical Information section at the end of this document.
  • If you see the dialog box: Go on to the next step.

On the dialog box, from the drop-down menu, click Permit.

Click OK.

To add a new program rule using the Add button.

  1. Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
  2. Click Options. Click Norton AntiVirus if you see a menu.
  3. On the left pane, select Internet Worm Protection.
  4. On the right pane, click Program Control.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Locate the program executable for the program that is having the problem.
  7. At the next dialog box, from the dropdown menu, click Permit.
  8. Click OK.

What Internet Worm Protection does
Norton Internet Worm Protection is a firewall that protects your computer from incoming Internet traffic. If you have a program that receives data from the Internet, then by default, Internet Worm Protection blocks the incoming traffic, unless you create a rule to allow the program.
