Scanning for threats in Safe mode with Norton AntiVirus 2005/2006

Use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in Safe mode |

- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
|

- In the Open box, type the following text:

- In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT.

- 7
- When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart and Go to STEP 4.
The computer restarts in Safe mode. This can take several minutes. |

- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.

- In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.

- Close all programs, and restart the computer. Go to STEP 4.

- When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start
tapping the F8 key. |

- In the Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe mode.

- Press Enter. Go to STEP 4.
- Windows starts in Safe mode. (This can take several minutes.)

- In the Advanced Troubleshooting Settings dialog box, check Enable Startup Menu, and
then click OK. |

- In the System Configuration Utility window, click OK.

- When you are asked to restart the computer, click Yes.

- When the Windows Startup Menu appears, select Safe Mode, and then press Enter.

Run a system scan from Command line |

- On the Windows desktop, click Start > Run.
|

- Type the following text:

- Do one of the following:

- If nothing is detected, you are done. Restart the computer in normal mode. Follow the steps under STEP 3: Choose your operating system.
- If a virus is detected, write down the name and location, and then try to repair it. If it still cannot be repaired, try to quarantine or delete it. (If the file is one that you need, you may have to reinstall it later.) Go on to line 5.
- If a worm, Trojan, or security risk is detected, write down the name and location, and then try to quarantine or delete it.

- Do one of the following:

- If you were able to quarantine or delete a virus, worm. Trojan, or security risk, you are done. Restart the computer in normal mode. Follow the steps under STEP 3: Choose your operating system.
- If you were not able to quarantine or delete a virus, worm, Trojan, or security risk, restart the computer in normal mode and then go to the Symantec Security Response online database. Enter the name of the risk that was detected and click search. Click the link. Click the removal instructions button to skip to that section and follow the steps to remove the infection.
