Situation:
After installing Norton AntiVirus or Norton AntiVirus Professional and restarting the computer, you see the following error message:
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or the System.ini file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using it's uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

This error message occurs during the boot process, before the Windows desktop loads. The error may also refer to SymRedRv or SymIDs.
Solution:
This error can be caused if the installation failed. To fix the problem, follow the steps in this section.
