How to use defragmentation utilities with GoBack enabled

Situation:
This document provides information about using defragmentation utilities while GoBack is protecting your computer.

Solution:
General information

If necessary, configure your defragmentation program to exclude the GoBack history file (Gobackio.bin) from being processed. Because the Gobackio.bin file is configured to prevent other programs from accessing it, this can prevent the defragmentation program from running correctly. (If a defragmentation program were to be successful in defragmenting the Gobackio.bin file, the system could be damaged or even made inoperable.)
If there are large numbers of disk writes by a defragmentation program, because GoBack must keep track of these writes, this could fill up the GoBack history file, and make it impossible to revert your system or recover recently-changed files.

Program specific information

Norton Speed Disk
What you need to do depends on the version of Norton Speed Disk that you are using, and the operating system that is installed on your computer.

Older versions of Norton Speed Disk
To make sure that an older version of Norton Speed Disk does not attempt to move the Gobackio.bin file
1. Start Norton Speed Disk.
2. Click Properties > Options.
3. Click Customize.
4. On the Unmovables tab, check both Hidden and System.
5. Click OK to save the changes.
  
  If you have already run Speed Disk and you see the message "Delayed Write Error" or "Disk Write Error," disable and then re-enable GoBack.
Norton Speed Disk 2002 and later
By default, Norton Speed Disk 2002 and later will not attempt to defragment Gobackio.bin. You do not have to do anything.

Raxco PerfectDisk 2000
The Raxco PerfectDisk 2000 defragmentation feature defragments the GoBack history file Gobackio.bin, which will cause the system to experience Delayed Write Errors or Disk Write Errors.

This occurs even if you have included the Gobackio.bin file in the PerfectDisk 2000 exclude list. To fix this, you must upgrade to PerfectDisk 2000 version 5.0 build 36, or later. Then add the Gobackio.bin file to the exclude list.

Executive Software Diskeeper
The Executive Software Diskeeper defragmentation feature also defragments the Gobackio.bin file, which causes the system to experience Delayed Write or Disk Write Errors. This occurs only if you have not excluded Gobackio.bin. After the file has been excluded, Diskeeper does not attempt to move the file in either an online or an off-line defragmentation. If you are experiencing Delayed Write or Disk Write Errors, you should uninstall, and then reinstall GoBack and add Gobackio.bin to the Diskeeper exclude list.
