How to use GoBack 3.x with drive imaging, duplication, and backup software
Situation:
This document describes the process of creating and restoring backups using disk duplication and imaging programs while using GoBack. Examples of this type of program are Norton Ghost and Drive Image.
Solution:
WARNING: If you are using Norton Ghost 2001, the instructions that follow do not apply. You
must disable GoBack when using this version of the software.
To copy a drive that is protected by GoBack
- Reboot the computer.
- When the GoBack countdown screen appears, press the Spacebar.
- Place the bootable disk in the floppy drive.
- From the GoBack Boot Menu, select Boot from Floppy.
It is very important that you boot through the GoBack screen. If you fail to do so, you may not be able to read any hard drives that are protected by GoBack.
- Run the disk duplication/imaging software to copy or image the drive.
Notes:
- Make sure the destination drive (the drive you are copying or saving the image to) is not protected by Norton GoBack.
- These steps assume that you use a bootable floppy disk with the drive copying software and that any network drivers you may need are on the floppy disk.
- While the GoBack history file is present in the copy or image, it contains no data. It is not possible to backup the GoBack history.
To restore a drive or image to a drive protected by GoBack
- Boot the computer using the boot disk for your duplication/imaging software.
- Run the disk duplication/imaging software to restore the drive.
- When the restoration is finished, remove the boot disk and restart the computer.
- When Windows starts, you will see a message that GoBack is currently disabled, asking if you want to re-enable it. Click Yes to restart the computer and enable GoBack.
Notes:
- If the drive has been replaced or if you have an older BIOS, you may need to set up drive parameters in the BIOS.
- Because the GoBack history was not backed up, the history log will only contain information for the most recent boot.
- Passwords and Auto-Revert will be reset to the default settings. You must re-enable Passwords and Auto-Revert if you want to use those features.
