How to restart the computer into Windows if a problem is encountered after running Ghost 2003

Situation:
You ran a Ghost Task, and the computer restarted into the Ghost Virtual Boot Partition. Ghost displayed errors or did not otherwise complete the Task, and the client computer does not restart into Windows. You want to know how to restart the computer into Windows.

Solution:
To solve this problem, run the Ghost GhReboot utility. See the document How to use GhReboot.

If the computer cannot load Windows after running GhReboot, then use the Ghost GDisk utility to fix the problem. For more information about the GDisk utility, see the document Switches: GDisk.

Note: GDisk is a powerful utility that can create, modify, and remove partitions. Before using GDisk to remove a partition, verify that you specify the correct partition number. Removing a partition prevents the computer from accessing the data that is on that partition. After you remove a partition, in many cases, the removed partition cannot be restored unless you created a backup of that partition before removing it.

To use GDisk to activate the Windows partition
  1. Locate or obtain a floppy disk that has the GDisk.exe file.
Note that this file is available on the Norton Ghost 2003 CD in the Support folder.
  2. Remove all CDs or floppy disks that are in the computer.
  3. Insert a Windows 98 Startup Disk or another bootable floppy disk into the drive and start the computer.
    • If you use a Windows 98 Startup Disk, then you will see a menu. Select the option that opens a DOS command prompt.
    • If you use a Ghost Standard Boot Disk, then you may see a Ghost menu. Select Quit to exit to a DOS command prompt.
  4. Insert the Norton Ghost 2003 CD into the CD-R or CD-RW drive.
  5. Type the following:

    <CD drive letter>:
    <CD drive letter>:\gdisk 1 /status

where <CD drive letter> is the drive letter of your CD-R/RW drive. This command displays status information regarding the partitions.
If the /status switch does not display all the partitions, ensure the latest LiveUpdate for Norton Ghost 2003 has been applied. For information on LiveUpdate, see the document Updates to Norton Ghost 2003. If the problem continues, include the /i switch as shown,

    <CD drive letter>:\gdisk 1 /status /i
  6. Examine the information to find the partition number of the Ghost Virtual Partition and the partition number of the drive's primary partition.
The Ghost Virtual Partition is a FAT16 file system and will be approximately 7.8 MB in size. The primary partition is usually the partition onto which you installed Windows.
  7. Type the following:

    gdisk 1 /act /p:x

In place of the letter x, use the partition number of the drive's primary partition. This command makes the primary partition active.
  8. Remove the floppy disk and CD.
  9. Restart the computer.
  10. After the reboot, run steps 1 through 5 to confirm that the Ghost Virtual Partition has been automatically deleted.
If the Ghost Virtual Partition still exists, continue with the following steps.
  11. Type the following:

    gdisk 1 /del /p:y

In place of letter y, use the partition number of the Ghost Virtual Partition. This command deletes the Ghost Virtual Partition.
  12. Remove the floppy disk and CD.
  13. Restart the computer.
    The computer loads Windows.

For more information on the causes of the problem, see the document Cannot start Windows after starting a Ghost 2003 task from Windows.
