Situation:
You cannot access Windows after running Norton Ghost 2003. You want to know how to fix this problem.
Solution:
The GhReboot.exe utility is used to resolve computer startup problems that may occur when you start a Ghost task from Windows.
The startup problems may occur when running Ghost tasks that use a Ghost Virtual Partition. In Norton Ghost 2003, all tasks that you run from the options Ghost Basic and Ghost Advanced use a Ghost Virtual Partition. For more information regarding how the problem occurs, see the document Cannot start Windows after starting a Ghost task from Windows.
GhReboot resolves the startup problem by disabling the Ghost Virtual Partition, resetting the Windows partition to active, and restarting the computer from the Windows partition.
Use this utility when you cannot start the computer from the hard drive due to an error such as "Missing operating system" or "Invalid system disk."
Use one of the following methods to run GhReboot.exe.
Note: To use GhReboot.exe, your computer must support starting the computer from a CD-ROM and the BIOS must be configured to start from the CD-ROM. If your computer is not already configured to start from a CD-ROM, consult the computer manufacturer's documentation for instructions for performing this configuration.
To run GhReboot from a CD-ROM disc
- Insert the Norton Ghost 2003 CD into the CD/DVD drive and start the computer. Ghost displays a menu.
- Press the Enter key. This step chooses the option "1. Continue without loading any driver."
- Type E:\support\ghreboot.exe
If you are using the Norton SystemWorks CD, the file location is E:\Support\Ghost\ghreboot.exe.
Use the drive letter of your CD/DVD drive in place of E:.
- Press the Enter key and remove the Norton Ghost 2003 CD from the drive.
When you press Enter in step 4, Ghost restores the master boot record and partition table and then restarts the computer into Windows.
If you see the same or similar error message, ensure that the floppy disk is not in the floppy drive and restart the computer. If you see the message again, Ghreboot.exe has not resolved the problem.
Note: If you cannot access the Ghreboot.exe utility from the Norton Ghost 2003 CD, download the attached file.
To download ghreboot.exe
- Download ghreboot.exe.
- Click Save.
- In the Save As screen, navigate to a folder on your hard drive where you can save the file.
For example, you can save the file to your Desktop folder.
- Click Save.
To run GhReboot from a bootable floppy disk
- Insert the bootable floppy disk into the drive, and then start the computer.
- If you used a Ghost Standard Boot Disk, you may see a Ghost menu. Choose Quit to exit to a DOS command prompt.
- If you used a Windows 98 Startup Disk, you see a menu. Choose the option that opens a DOS command prompt.
- Insert the Norton Ghost 2003 CD into the CD/DVD drive.
If the problem is not solved
If you do not have GhReboot.exe or the utility did not solve the startup problem, then use the following steps:
- If you see the same message as before or a similar error message, then ensure that the floppy disk is not in the floppy drive and restart the computer.
- If you see the message again, then Ghreboot.exe did not solve the problem. See the document How to restart the computer into Windows after using Ghost 2003.
