Error: "Symantec Ghost could not find the image file on the CD/DVD" when restoring an image

Situation:
You see the message "Insert CD/DVD (1980). Symantec Ghost could not find the image file on the CD/DVD. If the CD/DVD is not already inserted, then please insert it now then press Retry. Retry Cancel." in one of the following situations:

- When you restore an image from a CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD drive by using the Restore option from the Ghost Windows user interface.
- When you run a Ghost Integrity Check on an image that is on a CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD drive by using the Image Integrity Check option from the Ghost Windows user interface.

When you click Retry, Ghost does not respond. When you click Cancel, Ghost stops the operation and you cannot restore the image.

The CD or DVD disc is in the drive and the drive is attached to the computer by means of a Firewire or USB connection.

Solution:
This problem happens only when choosing the options Restore and Image Integrity Check from the Ghost Windows user interface. Ghost can correctly identify the CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD drive but cannot properly access the drive through DOS.

This problem has been resolved in the first update to Norton Ghost 2003. For more information on the update and how to install the update, see the document Updates to Norton Ghost 2003.

Other solution
This problem does not happen when you choose the option "Ghost Advanced," and then "Run Ghost Interactively." This option causes Ghost to access the drive directly, rather than through DOS. The option "Run Ghost Interactively" restarts the computer into the Ghost Virtual Partition and starts Ghost. To use this option, use the instructions "To restore the image."

Note that this solution may not work if you copied the image file to the drive rather than having Ghost save the image file directly to the drive.

To restore the image:

  1. Start an interactive operation:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and click Norton Ghost 2003.
    2. Click Norton Ghost.
    3. Click Ghost Advanced and then Run Ghost Interactively. This opens the Run Ghost Interactively Wizard.
  2. Configure the settings:
    1. Click Next and "Advanced settings."
    2. Click the tab External Storage. Check the appropriate connection type.
    3. Click the tab "CD Drivers" and ensure that "Assign drive letters to CD/DVD drives" is not checked.
    4. Click Apply and then OK.
  3. Click Next, click Next again, and then click Continue. Ghost displays the Norton Ghost Task Summary dialog box.
  4. Click "Run Now." The computer restarts into the Ghost Virtual Partition and starts Ghost.exe. You see the Ghost menu.
  5. Insert the CD or DVD disc into the drive.
  6. Identify the image that you want restored:
    1. Click Local.
    2. If restoring a partition image, click Partition, and then From Image.
    3. If restoring a disk image, click Disk, and then From Image.
    4. Choose the source drive (CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD) from the "Look in" box. Ghost displays "Ghost CD/DVD image" in the File List box.
    5. Click Open.
  7. Follow the prompts.
Ghost restores the disk or partition to the drive and restarts the computer into Windows.
