Error: "PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received"

Situation:You receive the error message, "PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received" on a client computer when you boot using a PXE capable Network Interface Card (NIC) while attempting to perform a Wake-on-LAN (WOL) capable task.

Solution:A DHCP server must be installed somewhere on the network in order to use the PXE protocol. If you use a DHCP Server, then you must also use the PXE Service (instead of the BOOTP service). The PXE service can be installed on the DHCP server computer or on a different computer:
  • If it's installed on the DHCP Server, then during the installation of the PXE Service, you must use the option that adds the "Option 60 PXEClient Tag String" to DHCP packets.
  • If it's installed on a different computer, then you must enable the ProxyDHCP function in the PXE Server software. A prompt to enable this appears the first time you use PXE.
