How to perform a clean installation of Norton Ghost under Windows XP

Situation:
While installing Norton Ghost 2002 or Norton Ghost 2003 under Windows XP, you see error messages, or the installation fails. Some of the messages may indicate that files cannot be found, or that the uninstaller was unable to initialize.

Solution:
Most installation problems are due to memory conflicts. Usually these conflicts can be solved by installing Norton Ghost 2002 or Norton Ghost 2003 in Safe mode. However, because Windows XP does not allow you to install software when booted to Safe mode, you need to perform a clean boot instead.

How to clean boot Windows XP:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run window appears.
  2. Type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility appears.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Click Selective Startup. Below it are several processing options.
  5. Uncheck all available options.

NOTE: You may not be able to uncheck Use Original BOOT.INI.
  6. Click the Services tab.
  7. Navigate to and click "Windows Installer" and "Task Scheduler" so that these options are enabled.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click Restart when prompted. Windows restarts--with a clean configuration.
  10. Install Norton Ghost 2002 or Norton Ghost 2003. After installing Norton Ghost 2002 or Norton Ghost 2003, the original Windows boot options needs to be restored.

How to restore the original Windows XP boot options:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run window appears.
  2. Type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility appears.
  3. Click Normal Startup, and then click OK.
  4. Click Restart when prompted.

Windows will restart normally with Norton Ghost 2002 or Norton Ghost 2003 properly installed.
