Error: "The WinFax printer add failed. Error code - 1797..." during installation

Situation:
While installing WinFax PRO, you see one of the following error messages:

"Error 1797 creating the WinFax printer"
or
"The WinFax printer add failed. Error code ---- 1797 PrinterName = WinFax."

Solution:
This error can occur on Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. Because this situation has a variety of causes, no one solution will work in every case. To resolve the problem, try each of the following solutions.

Reconfigure WinFax in Windows XP
This problem can be caused by configuration changes that occur when you install the Windows XP Service Pack 1.

To resolve the problem, follow the instructions in the section "Check the Windows Regional, Time Zone, and Language settings" in the document WinFax PRO 10.02 installation stops responding (or similar problems) after installing Service Pack 1 on Windows XP and follow the instructions in the document WinFax PRO 10.02 printers disappear or will not install after adding Windows XP Service Pack 1.

Disable RAS
This problem may be due to interference from the Remote Access Server (RAS) service. To resolve the problem, disable the RAS service. If you do not know how to disable a service, read the document How to start or stop a service in Windows. Stop the Remote Access Services service.

Install an HP Laserjet printer driver
This problem can occur when no printers are installed and WinFax cannot add a specific printer key to the Windows registry. To resolve the problem, install an HP Laserjet printer driver. If the computer already has an HP Laserjet printer installed, then reinstall it.

To install an HP Laserjet printer driver:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Double-click Add Printer, and then click Next.
  3. Select Local Printer, and then click Next.
  4. Under Manufacturers, find and select HP.
  5. Under Models, find and select HP LaserJet III, and then click Next.
  6. You may be asked for the Windows CD. Place it into the CD-ROM drive, and then click OK.
  7. Select the LPT port, and click Next.
  8. When you are asked if you would like this printer to be the default printer, select NO, and then click Next.
  9. When you are asked if you would like to print a test page, select NO, and then click Next. The HP printer should now appear in the Printers window.

Replace a missing registry key
When you install printer drivers, WinFax adds the Wfxprint key to the print processors key in the Windows registry. If the print processor key is missing from the registry, WinFax cannot add the Wfxprint key. To resolve this problem, read the Microsoft document Error Message: "Print Processor Is Unknown" (Q153355). After you restore the print processor key and the WinPrint key to the registry, reinstall WinFax.

Make sure that the Print Spooler service is running
If the Print Spooler is not running, start the service and then use the Symdiag utility to install the WinFax printer.

To make sure that the Print Spooler service is running
  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
  2. If the status of the Print Spooler service is Started, then do not continue with this procedure. Because the service is already running, the service is not the cause of the error message. Look at the other possible solutions in this document.
  3. If the status of the Print Spooler service is not Started, right-click Print Spooler and click Properties.
  4. On the General tab, in the Select Startup box, choose Automatic.
  5. Click Start > Apply > OK.
  6. Open Windows Explorer, go to the WinFax folder, and find the Symdiag.exe file.
If there is no WinFax folder or the folder does not contain the Symdiag.exe file, then install WinFax PRO. Otherwise, continue with step 7.
  7. Double-click the Symdiag.exe file.
  8. When you see a warning message about using this utility, click OK. The utility displays five choices.
  9. Click Application or Applet.
  10. Click WinFax PRO > Print Driver Installer.
  11. Click OK.

Reinstall WinFax
Uninstall and then reinstall WinFax PRO. If you have trouble uninstalling WinFax, read the document How to perform a complete removal of WinFax PRO/TalkWorks PRO.
