How to remove WinFax PRO or TalkWorks PRO

Situation:
You would like to remove WinFax PRO or TalkWorks PRO from the computer.

Solution:
To perform a basic uninstallation of WinFax PRO or TalkWorks PRO, use the Add/Remove Programs option in Windows.

To back up existing data

  1. Close all open applications, and stop the WinFax PRO or TalkWorks PRO service if you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000.
  2. Open Windows Explorer.
  3. Locate the \Data directory on the hard drive. For a standard installation, the location is:

    C:\Program Files\Symantec\WinFax (for WinFax PRO 9.0x/10.x)
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\TalkWorks (for TalkWorks PRO 2.0x/3.0x)
  4. Copy the \Data folder to a different location on the hard drive if you plan on reinstalling (for example, C:\MYBACKUP). Make sure that the location is not within the Symantec folder.
  5. Repeat for the \Cover folder (if you have any custom cover pages).

This procedure makes a backup of your WinFax Data and Cover folders. For how to restore the data from these backups, see How to keep your existing WinFax PRO data when installing WinFax PRO 10.

To use the Add/Remove Programs option
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select WinFax PRO (or TalkWorks PRO), and then click Add/Remove. The program is uninstalled from the computer. During the uninstallation, click Yes when asked if you want to delete all data. (You backed up the data in the previous step.)
  4. Restart the system.

Other removal methods
If you receive error messages during the uninstallation, see the document How to manually uninstall WinFax PRO or TalkWorks PRO.
