Error: "Automation Error" or "Component not registered" or "Run-time error -214747851. . ." when starting the Word 2000 print or merge macros

Situation:
When you start the Word 2000 merge macro from the Word 2000 Tools menu or from the WinFax selection in the File menu, you see one of the following error messages: "Automation Error" or "Component not correctly registered" or "Run-time error -214747851 (80010105) Automation error."

Solution:
After you complete each of the following sections, test to see if the problem is resolved. If the problem is not fixed, go to the next section.

Remove and recreate the Cover.db file
This error message can appear if the WinFax PRO Cover Page database file (Cover.db file) is corrupted. To fix this, rename and create a new Cover.db file as follows.

To rename and create a new Cover.db file

  1. Exit all open programs and stop the WinFax PRO service if you are running Windows 2000/NT.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer. The Windows Explorer window appears.
  3. Locate the \Data folder on the hard drive. On a standard install, the location is:

    C:\Program Files\Symantec\WinFax
  4. Rename the Cover.db file to Cover.old.
  5. Start WinFax PRO Message Manager.
  6. Click the View menu, and click Cover Pages.
  7. Click the Tools menu, and click Maintenance Utility.
  8. Click Launch Applet, select DB file repair, and then click OK.
  9. Select Cover Page and then click OK.
  10. Click Yes to continue with database rebuild.
  11. Ensure that the Cover folder is correct. If not, use the browse button to specify the correct location. Click OK.
  12. Click Finish.
  13. Restart the computer and start Word 2000.

Enable the WinFax Automation Server
This error message can also appear if the WinFax Automation Server cannot be found in the location specified by Word 2000. The WinFax Automation Server is used by external applications, such Office 2000, to communicate with WinFax.

To enable the WinFax Automation Server
  1. In Word 2000, click the Tools menu, point to Macro, and click Visual Basic Editor. (Pressing Alt+F11 will also do this).
  2. Click the Tools menu, and click References.
  3. Check "WinFax Automation Server," click OK, click File, and then click Close.
  4. Exit, and then restart Word 2000. The error message should not appear.

The "WinFax Automation Server" does not remain checked after restarting Word 2000. This is working as designed and is a normal function of Word 2000.

Linking the Wfxctl32.tlb file to the WinFax Automation Server macro
Use the following steps to create a link between the Wfxctl32.tlb file and the WinFax Automation Server macro.

To link the Wfxctl32.tlb file to the macro
  1. In Word 2000, click the Tools menu, point to Macro, and click Visual Basic Editor. (Pressing Alt+F11 will also do this.)
  2. Click Tools, and click References.
  3. Select "WinFax Automation Server" and click Browse. If "WinFax Automation Server" is not listed in Word 2000, then manually add the WinFax Automation Server by clicking Browse from the References dialog box..
  4. Locate and select Wfxctl32.tlb. This is located in the ...\WinFax folder.
  5. Click OK, click File, and click Close.
  6. Exit, and then restart Word 2000.

Renaming the Normal.dot template
The Normal.dot template file might be corrupted. When you rename the Normal.dot template file and restart Word, Word creates a new Normal.dot template file.

  2. From the Look In drop-down list, select the drive to which Word is installed.
  3. Check Include subfolders (if not already checked).
  4. In the Named field, type normal.dot and click Find Now. Windows displays all files matching the search criteria.
  5. Select Normal.dot, click File, and click Rename. A flashing cursor appears in the filename field.
  6. In the file name field, type normal.old and press Enter.
  7. Restart Word 2000 to recreate the Normal.Dot template.
  8. Reinstall macros for Word 2000.
