How to configure a Mac OS X Computer as an internal LiveUpdate server using FTP

Solution:
For Mac OS X Server

Note: The following instructions are for anonymous access. If you have access control or security requirements, please refer to Mac OS X Server documentation.

For Tiger (10.4.x):
  1. Open Server Admin.
  2. In the Computers & Services list, click FTP.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click General.
  5. Under Access, click Enable anonymous access.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Click Start Service.
  8. Create a directory in the default FTP service directory to store the definition files and the program update files.
For example, /Library/FTPServer/FTPRoot/LiveUpdate. Note that by default, the FTP service directory is /Library/FTPServer/FTPRoot/

For Leopard (10.5.x):
  1. Open Server Admin.
  2. With the server highlighted, if you do not already see FTP in the left pane, you will want to add it:
    - choose Settings, then Services then put a check in the box in front of FTP.
  3. Otherwise, in the left pane, if FTP does not already have a green dot in front of it, select the FTP service and click on Start FTP.
  4. Put a check in the box in front of Enable Anonymous Access.

For Mac OS X Client

For Tiger (10.4.x):
  1. Open System Preferences, then choose Sharing.
  2. Select Services.
  3. Put a check in the box that says FTP Access.

For Leopard (10.5.x):
  1. Open System Preferences, then choose Sharing.
  2. Choose to enable File Sharing, then choose Options.
  3. Put check in the box that says Share Files and Folders using FTP.

After enabling the service and creating the folder in which to store the updates, configure LiveUpdate Administration Utility to use this folder.
  1. In the LiveUpdate Administration Utility, choose option 1, Manage Preferences.
  2. Under Manage Preferences, at preference 2, choose to "Set preferences individually".
  3. At preference 3, specify the folder where downloaded product update files are stored. Enter the full path, or drag and drop the folder where downloaded LiveUpdate packages will be stored. The program refers to this folder as the "download folder". If a download folder was previously specified, press return to select that folder.
