You want to know how to download and use the Intelligent Updater for your Symantec product.


Solution:
The best practice for maintaining security with Symantec Antivirus is to use LiveUpdate to keep your virus definitions up to date. For more information about using LiveUpdate, see the document Updating virus definitions on a daily basis with Symantec AntiVirus : http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2005092109545048. The Intelligent Updater is provided as an alternative for situations where LiveUpdate is unavailable or undesirable.



Download the Intelligent Updater

1. Determine the Symantec product you have
   A list of Symantec products with published Intelligent Updaters is in the References section below
2. Determine which version of the Symantec product you have
   If you are not sure which version of Symantec product is being used
   1. Start the program
   2. Click Help> About.
      
3. Download the Intelligent Updater file by going to: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html
   Note: Microsoft Vista users should read the document How to update virus definition files using the Intelligent Updater in Windows Vista
4. Click the appropriate Language and Product, and then click Download Updates
5. Read the table carefully to determine which set of files you should download for your version of Symantec antivirus software

To use the Intelligent updater for Norton and Symantec Antivirus clients:

1. Download the file to your hard drive
2. Locate the file that you downloaded, for example, 20020912-005-x86.exe
3. Double-click the file to open it

To use the Intelligent updater for Symantec Antivirus servers:

1. Download the file to your hard drive
2. Locate the file that you downloaded, for example, "20020912-005.XDB"
3. Confirm that it was saved as a ".XDB". If not you will need to rename the file
4. Copy and paste that file to C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus
