Applying Symantec Client Security 3.1 and Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 Maintenance Patch 1 Point Patch 1

Question/Issue:
This document explains how to apply Symantec Client Security 3.1 and Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 Maintenance Patch 1 Point Patch 1.


Solution:


Before you begin:
With the use of this patch, you can upgrade only those computers that run Symantec Client Security 3.1 or Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 with Maintenance Patch 1 already installed.


About applying the patch

The Symantec Client Security patch lets you upgrade your Symantec Client Security clients and servers while preserving their configuration settings. Because of the complexity and size of Symantec Client Security software, applying a patch provides a quicker, less costly, and more efficient method by which to upgrade your clients and servers.

You can use standard installation methods to apply the Symantec Client Security patch, such as local, network, Active Directory, or third-party tools.

WARNING: You cannot uninstall the Symantec Client Security patch once it is installed on your clients and servers. If you need to remove the patch, you must first uninstall the Symantec Client Security client or server, then reinstall the previous Symantec software that does not contain the patch. To avoid this scenario, before you deploy the Symantec Client Security patch, you should install the patch in a test environment and ensure that the patch does not interfere with the normal operation of your computers and network.




Download and apply the Symantec Client Security patch
You can download the Symantec Client Security patch from a designated FTP Web site. You can apply the patch locally to an individual computer, or you can use Symantec System Center to deploy the patch to managed clients.

To download the Symantec Client Security patch for Windows
Do one of the following, depending on your program version:
To find out whether your product version requires a license, read Determining whether Symantec Client Security 3.x or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.x requires a license. To obtain the Symantec Client Security patch for NetWare
The SYM06-010 Point Patch is not yet available for Symantec Client Security and Symantec AntiVirus servers on Novell NetWare.

To apply the Symantec Client Security patch locally
  1. Extract the .msp file from the .zip file that you downloaded.
  2. Copy the .msp file onto the computer to which you need to apply the patch.
  3. Double-click the .msp file to apply the patch.
  4. Restart the computer if you are asked to do so.


To deploy the Symantec Client Security patch by using the Client Remote tool
  1. Extract the .msp file and the Vpremote.dat file from the .zip file that you downloaded into a new folder on a management server.
  2. In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec System Center\Deployment\ClientRemote Installation\.
  3. Copy the files Clientremote.exe and Vpremote.exe into the same new folder as the .msp file and the Vpremote.dat file.
  4. In the new folder, double-click the Clientremote.exe file to start the Client Remote Tool.
  5. When you are asked to select the Install Source Location, click Deploy Patch Path, and then click Browse.
  6. Find the .msp file that you copied to the new folder, and then click Next.
  7. In the left pane, under Available computers, select the computers to which you want to deploy the patch.
  8. In the right pane, under Patch Targets, click the name of the patch that you want to deploy.
  9. Click Add.
    Type a user name and a password if you are asked to do so.
  10. Click Finish.
    Computers may restart automatically after you install the patch. To prevent a restart, edit the Vpremote.dat file in the new folder.
    You must restart the computer after patch deployment in order to enable Auto-Protect.

To edit the Vpremote.dat file in order to prevent automatic restart
  1. Open the Vpremote.dat file in a plain-text editor, such as Notepad.
  2. Do one of the following, depending on your product:
    • For Symantec Client Security, change the command line to the following so that it appears on one line:

      msiexec.exe /p SCS_3.1.0.401_AllWin_EN.msp /qn REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus REBOOT=ReallySuppress

    • For Symantec AntiVirus, change the command line to the following so that it appears on one line:

      msiexec.exe /p SAVCE_10.1.0.401_AllWin_EN.msp /qn REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=omus REBOOT=ReallySuppress

  3. Save the file and close it.
