Before you begin:
If you have Maintenance Release 4 or later for Symantec AntiVirus 10.x or Symantec Client Security 3.x, you do not need to install any of the patches listed in this document. All previous versions of Symantec AntiVirus 10.x are vulnerable and require a patch.

Frequently asked questions

• What versions are affected by the vulnerability?
  For a detailed list of which versions are affected, read the advisory.
  All versions of Symantec AntiVirus 10.x earlier than those in the solutions column on the advisory page are vulnerable.
  
• What versions are not affected by the vulnerability?
  Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh 10.x, Symantec Client Security 2.x and earlier, Symantec AntiVirus 9.x and earlier, and consumer versions of Norton AntiVirus are not affected.
  
• Are the patches available through LiveUpdate?
  No. In order to allow greater version control within a network, Symantec Client Security and Symantec AntiVirus use LiveUpdate only to update virus definitions and IPS signatures. This means that patches and other software upgrades cannot be delivered through LiveUpdate for these products.
  
• How do I determine which version I have?
  To determine the product version, start Symantec AntiVirus. The version is in the right pane, under Program Versions.
  To find out whether your product version requires a license, read Determining whether Symantec Client Security 3.x or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.x requires a license.
  
• Does the patch require a restart?
  The patch does require a restart on clients and servers. However, the restart does not have to be immediate. After the patch is installed, Auto-Protect still protects the computer, and the computer is protected against the vulnerability. The restart is required to update the product version information, and for the Windows Installer to perform cleanup functions. This means that you can install the patch to provide immediate protection, and users can restart their computers when it is convenient.

64-bit Windows clients
If you have Symantec Client Security 3.1 or Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 and you use the English 64-bit edition of Symantec AntiVirus, read the following document to get the patch: Applying the SYM06-010 point patch for 64-bit Symantec Client Security 3.1 and Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 clients.

If you have any version of Symantec Client Security 3.0.x or Symantec AntiVirus 10.0.x, you must migrate the 64-bit clients to Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 in order to apply the patch. Because you cannot use a Symantec Client Security 3.0.x or Symantec AntiVirus 10.0.x server to manage 3.1/10.1 clients, you must leave the clients unmanaged. If you have any servers with Symantec Client Security 3.1 or Symantec AntiVirus 10.1, you can use these servers to manage the 64-bit clients. Novell NetWare servers
To fix the vulnerability on Novell NetWare servers, you must upgrade to Maintenance Release 4 for Symantec Client Security 3.x and Symantec AntiVirus 10.x.
