Managing 64-bit clients with Symantec System Center

Question/Issue:
You have one or more computers that run the 64-bit version of Symantec AntiVirus client. You need to know how to manage these clients with Symantec System Center.

Solution:
To make an unmanaged 64-bit client managed, first drop a copy of the parent server's Grc.dat file on the client.
For directions, read the document for your version of Symantec AntiVirus:

To manage 64-bit clients with the Symantec System Center, configure the client settings so that the clients do not receive automatic virus definitions updates. The easiest way to configure the client settings is to configure a client group and place your 64-bit clients in this group. You can rely on users to click LiveUpdate, or you can set a LiveUpdate schedule for the group by using the Symantec System Center.

To manage 64-bit clients with the Symantec System Center
  1. Create a client group.
  2. Right-click the client group.
  3. Uncheck Inherit settings from Server Group.
  4. Right-click the client group, and then select All Tasks > Symantec AntiVirus > Virus Definition Manager.
  5. In the Virus Definition Manager dialog box, uncheck Update virus definitions from parent server.
  6. Do one or both of the following:
    • Uncheck Do not allow client to manually launch LiveUpdate.
    • Check Schedule client for automatic updates using LiveUpdate, click Schedule, specify a schedule, and then click OK.
  7. Click OK

After you install 64-bit client software, drag the client computers into this client group.

If the 64-bit clients do not appear in the client group, confirm that Symantec System Center is set to show clients in client groups.

To show clients in client groups in Symantec System Center
  1. In Symantec System Center, click Tools > SSC Console Options.
  2. Do one of the following, depending on your program version:
    • For Symantec AntiVirus 10.x, on the Client Display tab, check Show client computers when viewing client groups.
    • For Symantec AntiVirus 9.x, on the Client Filter tab, check Show client machines when viewing Groups.
  3. Click OK.

Important Note if Using a LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x server to Update 64-bit Clients
If you are using an internal LiveUpdate server to update your SAV 10.1 64-bit clients, be sure to use the Settings.Hosts.LiveUpdate file exported by LUA 2.x into all 64-bit SAV 10.1 clients. You must copy this Settings.Hosts.LiveUpdate file to the \Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate directory on the SAV 10.1 64-bit client computers. While the Symantec System Center can provide scheduling information to the clients, these Settings.Hosts.LiveUpdate files contain important configuration settings that will direct the SAV 10.1 clients toward the internal LiveUpdate server.

More information is available in the Symantec LiveUpdateâ„¢ Administrator 2.2 User's Guide.

Technical Information:
Clients that run the 64-bit version of Symantec AntiVirus cannot receive virus definitions updates from a parent server.
