Scanning for expanded threats with Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.x
Question/Issue:
You need to know how to set up Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.x to scan for all expanded threat types.
Solution:
Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.x can scan for expanded threats only during scheduled or manual scans. To make sure that Symantec AntiVirus scans for expanded threats, turn this option on when you set up the scan.
To turn on expanded threat scanning for an individual scheduled or manual scan
- Create a new scan, or select the scan that you want to edit.
- Click Options.
- Check Scan for expanded threats.
- Click the first Exclusions button, and make sure that all threat categories are checked.
For information about expanded threat categories, go to the Symantec Security Response Web site.
- Click OK twice.
When this scan runs, Symantec AntiVirus will scan for all expanded threat types.
To make sure that Symantec AntiVirus scans for expanded threats every time that a scheduled or manual scan is run, change a registry value on the computer.

To enforce expanded threat scanning for all scheduled and manual scans
- Exit all programs.
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type the following:
regedit
- Click OK.
- Find the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Custom Tasks\Default Scan Options
- In the right pane, double-click the ScanForGreyware value.
If the ScanForGreyware value does not exist, create it. Directions for how to do this are in the Technical Information section of this document.
- Type 1 in the Value data field.
- Click OK.
- Find the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Custom Tasks
- Delete any subkeys that start with Manual Task.
For example:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Custom Tasks\Manual Task (f00fa8ee-1378-42e0-bb06-cfc0bda6f07f)
- Exit the Registry Editor.
The next time that you run a scheduled or manual scan, the Scan for expanded threats option is turned on by default, and Symantec AntiVirus will scan for all expanded threat types.
Technical Information:
Adding the registry value if it does not exist
If the ScanForGreyware registry value does not exist, create it using the steps below.
To add the registry value if it does not exist
- Exit all open programs.
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type the following:
regedit
- Click OK.
- Find the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Custom Tasks\Default Scan Options
- Right-click the Default Scan Options key, and click New > DWORD Value.
- Give the value the following name:
ScanForGreyware
- In the right pane, double-click the ScanForGreyware value.
- Type 1 in the Value data field.
- Click OK.
- Exit the Registry Editor.
