Configuring Windows Security Center alerts during installation of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x or Symantec Client Security 1.x
Question/Issue:
You need to know how to configure Windows Security Center alerts during installation of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x or Symantec Client Security 1.x
Solution:
An installation of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition or Symantec Client Security can automatically configure Windows Security Center to enable or disable alerting by using new properties in the Setup.wis file. This functionality is available in the following program versions:
- Symantec AntiVirus 9.0 MR2 or later
- Symantec Client Security 2.0 MR2 or later
- Symantec AntiVirus 8.0.1 MR9 or later
- Symantec Client Security 1.0.1 MR9 or later
- Symantec AntiVirus 8.1.1 MR6 or later
- Symantec Client Security 1.1.1 MR6 or later
The following table describes the new Setup.wis file properties.
| Property | Behavior | Settings and defaults |
| WSCAVALERT=x | Configures antivirus alerts for Windows Security Center | x=1 (disable)
x=0 (enable)
Default=1 |
| WSCFWALERT=x | Configures firewall alerts for Windows Security Center | x=1 (disable)
x=0 (enable)
Default=1 |
If you are installing Symantec AntiVirus 8.x or Symantec Client Security 1.x (which includes Symantec AntiVirus 8.x and Symantec Client Firewall 5.x), alerts may be configured during installation through Symantec Packager. The WSCAVALERT and WSCFWALERT properties are specified in the Setup.wis file and then rebuilt in Symantec Packager.
See the following documents on your Symantec product CD about using Symantec Packager:
- Symantec Client Security Installation Guide, Chapter 8
(\DOCs\scsinst.pdf or \Docs\scsinst.pdf)
- Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Installation Guide, Chapter 8
(\DOCs\savce80i.pdf or \Docs\savce81i.pdf)
To configure alerts during installation
- Start Symantec Packager.
- Import the product module (.PMI file) from the Packager\Products directory on your Symantec product CD. The PMI files are as follows:
- Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Client.PMI
- Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Server.PMI
- Symantec Client Firewall.PMI
- On the same computer, use any standard text editor to open the corresponding .wis file for each product for which you want to configure the alert setting. Note that the .wis file is a hidden file. The .wis files are in the following locations:
- Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Client
\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Symantec\Packager\Products\ {0EFC6259-3AD8-4CD2-BC57D4937AF5CC0E}.product_version\Files\BinaryTable\CD_Install_Files\Setup.wis
where user_name is the currently logged in user and product_version is the version number of the product that you are installing (for example, 8.1.1.349).
- Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Server
\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Symantec Packager\Products\
{7D2B86CA-2D5D-469E-92EDE56B62BD1D3C}.product_version\Files\ BinaryTable\CD_Install_Files\Setup.wis
where user_name is the currently logged in user and product_version is the version number of the product that you are installing (for example, 8.1.1.349).
- Symantec Client Firewall
\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Symantec\Packager\Products\{A6F7E997-2236-4145- A028-438F2484241A}.product_version\Files\Setup.wis
where user_name is the currently logged in user and product_version is the version number of the product that you are installing (for example, 8.1.1.349).
- Under the Windows Security Center section of the file, depending on which product file you are modifying, modify the WSCAVALERT or WSCFWALERT property. In the following example, the WSCFWALERTproperty in the Symantec Client Firewall Setup.wis file has been modified to enable alerts:
[WindowsSecurityCenter]
; Configures the Windows Security Center Firewall Alert FirewallDisableNotify setting.
; 0 - Enables alerts sent from Symantec Client Firewall through Windows Security Center
; 1 - (Default) Disables alerts sent through Windows Security Center for Symantec Client Firewall
; 2 - No Action is taken to either disable or enable the alert setting.
WSCFWALERT=0
- Save the file.
- Rebuild the product package using Symantec Packager, which creates an .exe file in the following directory:
Documents and Settings\user_name\My Documents\Packager\Deployment
where user_name is the currently logged in user.
- Install the .exe file.
Technical Information:
When a Symantec product is uninstalled, Windows Security Center returns the state before the Symantec product installation. For example, if Windows Security Center antivirus alerts were enabled before the Symantec product installation, the alerts are re-enabled after the Symantec product uninstallation.
