Troubleshooting licensing problems in Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.x/9.x and Symantec Client Security 3.x/2.x

Question/Issue:
This document explains how to solve problems related to licensing in Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.x/9.x and Symantec Client Security 3.x/2.x.

Solution:

Before you begin: Make sure that the server group has a primary server. For directions, see the Technical Information section of this document.

Find the section that describes your situation, and follow the directions that appear in that section.

You cannot apply the license, or you see errors after you apply the license
A corrupted license file often causes this problem. Replace the license file on the primary server.

To replace the license file on the primary server
  1. Go to the \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Licenses folder on the primary server.
  2. Delete the old license (.slf) file.
Deleting all .slf files will affect other licensed Symantec products on the computer. You will need to reinstall licenses for these products.
  3. Open Symantec System Center.
  4. Right-click the server group, and click All Tasks > Symantec License Management > Manage License Seat Allocations.
  5. Click Add , and then click Browse.
  6. Find the license file that you downloaded for Symantec AntiVirus, and click Open.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Set the allocations to the number of machines currently in the server group.
  9. Click Next twice, and then click Finish.

If these steps do not fix the problem, delete the old license file from the Symantec AntiVirus client.

To delete the license file from the client
  1. Go to the \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Licenses folder on the client.
  2. Delete the old license (.slf) file.
Deleting all .slf files will affect other licensed Symantec products on the computer. You will need to reinstall licenses for these products.

You cannot allocate the correct number of seats for your license
Reset the license seat allocations by changing the seat allocation to the lowest number possible. Then set the seat allocation to the correct number.

To reset the license seat allocations
  1. Open Symantec System Center.
  2. Right-click the server group, and click All Tasks > Symantec License Management > Manage License Seat Allocations.
  3. Double-click the license file.
  4. Set the seat allocation to the lowest number possible.
  5. Click Next twice, and then click Finish.
  6. Close Symantec System Center.
  7. Open Symantec System Center.
  8. Right-click the server group, and click All Tasks > Symantec License Management > Manage License Seat Allocations.
  9. Double-click the license file.
  10. Set the allocations to the number of computers currently in the server group.
  11. Click Next twice, and then click Finish.

If these steps do not solve the problem, follow the directions in the "You cannot add or allocate seats" section of this document.

You cannot add or allocate seats
You see an error message when you try to add or allocate seats, or you cannot set the license seat allocations to the number of seats provided by your license. You need to reset all license data on the primary server.

To reset all license data on the primary server
  1. Go to the \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Licenses folder on the primary server.
  2. Delete all license (.slf) files.
Deleting all .slf files will affect other licensed Symantec products on the computer. You will need to reinstall licenses for these products.
  3. Start the Registry Editor.

WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Read the document Backing up the Windows registry for instructions.

  4. In the left pane of the registry editor, go to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Licensing\Data\

  5. Delete all of the keys under Data.
The keys should look similar to the following example:

    31A8C80FD7F24D21B9FC536C09A119E1
  6. Close the Registry Editor.
  7. Click Start > Run.
  8. Type the following and click OK:

    services.msc
  9. Restart the following services:

    Intel PDS
    Intel File Transfer
    Intel File Originator
    Intel Alert Handler
    Symantec AntiVirus
    Symantec System Center Discovery Service
  10. Open Symantec System Center.
  11. Right-click the server group, and click All Tasks > Symantec License Management > Manage License Seat Allocations.
  12. Click Add , and then click Browse.

  14. Click Next.
  15. Set the allocations to the number of machines currently in the server group.
  16. Click Next twice, and then click Finish.
If the problem persists, repeat steps 1-10 on other parent servers in the server group and on any computers that are running Symantec System Center.

Technical Information:
This problem can happen if the server group does not have a primary server.

To designate the primary server

  1. In the Symantec System Center, with the server group unlocked, right-click the server.
  2. Click Make server a primary server.
  3. Confirm the change.
