Updating Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition virus definitions without using LiveUpdate
Question/Issue:
Your situation does not allow you to use LiveUpdate to update your Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition server. You need to automatically update the virus definitions without using LiveUpdate.
Solution:
If you cannot use LiveUpdate to obtain definitions, you can use a FTP script to download the definitions directly. You can also use a FTP script to obtain Rapid Release definitions, the most recent definitions available.
Note: These utilities are provided for your convenience only. Symantec Technical Support cannot provide support for the creation, use, or troubleshooting of Windows scripts.
XDBdown.cmd script
The
XDBdown.cmd script runs on Windows 2003/XP/2000.
To use the XDBdown.cmd script to update a Symantec AntiVirus server installation
- Save the script to a folder on the hard drive.
- Open the script in a text editor such as Notepad.exe.
- Change the @set COPY_XDB_TO line to point to the correct folder for your installation of Symantec AntiVirus. For example:
@set COPY_XDB_TO="c:\Program Files\SAV\"
For help with finding the correct folder, read the "To find the Symantec AntiVirus program folder" section in the Technical Information section of this document.
- Set the line @set RAPIDRELEASE=0 to =1 if you want to use Rapid Release definitions. These are released hourly, but are not passed by a full quality analysis process. Do not use Rapid Release definitions unless there is a critical need for the newest definitions.
- If you want the script to run unattended, use the Windows Task Scheduler to schedule it.
Improvements over previous scripts:
- Only downloads a new .xdb file if there is an update since the last time the script was run, making it possible to schedule the script to run more often without wasting bandwidth.
- Saves a log file, XDBdown.log. The log file shows when the script ran, when a new update was downloaded, and any problems that occurred.
- Can be set to download rapid-release definitions.
VDBdown.cmd script
The
VDBdown.cmd script runs on Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 and is similar to the above script, but downloads a .vdb file rather than an .xdb file, for use with Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.x server.
WARNING: The .vdb file should not be used to update Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x and 9.x servers. Only the .xdb file should be used to update these installations. For more information please read

To use the VDBdown.cmd script to update a Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.x server installation
- Save the script to a folder on the hard drive.
- Open the script in a text editor such as Notepad.exe.
- Change the line @set COPY_XDB_TO="c:\Program Files\NAV\" to point to the correct folder for your installation of Norton AntiVirus.
- Set the line @set RAPIDRELEASE=0 to =1 if you want to use Rapid Release definitions. These are released hourly, but are not passed by a full quality analysis process. Do not use Rapid Release definitions unless there is a critical need for the newest definitions.
- If you want the script to run unattended, use the Windows Task Scheduler to schedule it.
Technical Information:
To find the Symantec AntiVirus program folder
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
- In the Open box, type the following text:
cmd
- Click OK.
- At the command prompt, type the following:
net share
- Under Share name, find the VPHOME listing.
The folder listed in the Resource column is the Symantec AntiVirus program folder.
