Error: "You must have the Root Certificate Update installed. . ." while installing Symantec AntiVirus 9 client on Windows 98 or Windows Me

Question/Issue:
You try to install Symantec AntiVirus Client on Windows Me/98, and you see the following system message: "You must have the Root Certificate Update installed. Please visit www.windowsupdate.com for more information." You installed all critical updates through windowsupdate.microsoft.com, but you still see the error message.


Solution:
Follow these steps to download and install the Root Certificates Update from windowsupdate.com:

To manually download and install the Root Certificates Update

  1. Go to the following Web site:

    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

  2. Click Scan for updates.
    If you want to include the update file in a separate package, you can download the patch directly from the Microsoft Web site.
  3. In the left pane, do one of the following:
    • In Windows Me, click Windows Millennium Edition.
    • In Windows 98, click Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition.
  4. Scroll through the list until you see Root Certificates Update.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Review and install updates.
  7. Click Install Now.
  8. After the update has finished, exit the browser and attempt the installation again.
    You should be able to install Symantec AntiVirus 9 without seeing the error message.
