Setting the preferred protocol used by Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
Question/Issue:
Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition clients show the status of "Not Logged In" in the Symantec System Center console, or they have disappeared altogether from the Symantec System Center console.
Solution:
If both IPX/SPX and IP protocols are present on either the server or client, then by default, Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition will use IPX/SPX. If the server is running only IP and the clients have IPX and IP, then you may lose client communication to the console, and clients will show Not Logged In. Use the following steps to set the protocol used by the Parent Server and to set the protocol used by the clients.
Note: If multiple protocols are enabled, then the preferred protocol will be used by default. If that fails, then the secondary protocol will be used.
WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. See the document
How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.
Setting protocol for Windows servers and clients
- Set the protocol used by the parent server to the desired protocol by making a registry change to the parent server. Follow these steps to set to either IP or IPX as the default protocol (only one protocol can be set as the preferred protocol).
To set IP or IPX as the default protocol
- Download one of the following registry files, depending on what protocol you want to use for the parent server:
PreferedProtocol_IP.reg
PreferedProtocol_IPX.reg
- Double-click the file to import it into the system registry on the parent server.
- Start Regedit to verify that the DWORD value has been set correctly. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion
It will appear in the right pane as PreferedProtocol with a DWORD value of 0x00000000 (0) for IP or 0x00000001 (1) for IPX.
- Set the protocol used by the clients to the desired protocol by making a registry change to the parent server. The client receives the preferred protocol setting from the parent server in the same way it receives definitions and other settings. Follow these steps to set to either IP or IPX as the default protocol (only one protocol can be set as the preferred protocol).
To set IP or IPX as the default protocol
- Download one of the following registry files, depending on what protocol you want to use for the parent server:
Client_PreferedProtocol_IP.reg
Client_PreferedProtocol_IPX.reg
- Double-click the file to import it into the system registry on the parent server.
- Open Regedit and verify that the DWORD value has been set correctly. Navigate to the following key:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\ClientConfig
It will appear in the right pane as PreferedProtocol with a DWORD value of 0x00000000 (0) for IP or 0x00000001 (1) for IPX.
Note: PreferedProtocol is the correct spelling.
Once the appropriate .reg file is imported into the registry, some additional steps are needed to force the clients to begin using the preferred protocol:
- A new Grc.dat must be generated. This can be done in one of several ways:
- Within the Symantec System Center, change an option within Client Realtime Protection Options and click "Reset all". You can immediately go back into the option and change it back to the original setting. Clicking "Reset all" after changing settings generates a new Grc.dat and distributes it to the clients immediately.
- Update the server's virus definitions.
- Stop and restart the Symantec AntiVirus Server service.
- The client must receive the new copy of Grc.dat.
- If the client has been and still is communicating with the parent server, it will automatically obtain the updated Grc.dat.
- If the client is not communicating with the parent server, then you must manually copy the Grc.dat to the Symantec AntiVirus directory on the client. The following are the default locations to copy the Grc.dat to, listed by operating system and version of Symantec AntiVirus:
Windows 2000 Norton AntiVirus 7.0x clients
<Drive>:\Program Files\NAVNT
Windows 2000 Norton AntiVirus 7.5x/Symantec AntiVirus clients
<Drive>:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5
Windows NT 4.0 Norton AntiVirus 7.0x clients
<Drive>:\Program Files\NavNT
Windows NT 4.0 Norton AntiVirus 7.5x/Symantec AntiVirus clients
<Drive>:\WinNT\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5
Windows 95/98/Me Norton AntiVirus 7.0x and 7.5x clients
<Drive>\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus or <Drive>\Program Files\NAV
Windows 98/Me Symantec AntiVirus clients
<Drive>\Program Files\Symantec_Client_Security\Symantec AntiVirus
Note: These are the default paths. Drive letters and paths may differ due to the %systemRoot% variable. You must wait seven minutes for the Grc.dat file to be processed, or stop and then restart the Symantec AntiVirus Server service. On some systems, the Application Data folder is a hidden folder.
Setting protocol for NetWare Servers
To set the protocol for NetWare Servers
- Unload Symantec AntiVirus at the server console.
- Load VPREGEDT.NLM.
- Press F5 to open the Command Menu.
The <A>dd <E>dit <O>pen and <D>elete shortcut keys are only active after pressing F5.
- The "VirusProtect6" key will then be highlighted. Press Enter to select it.
All of the subkey items will appear in the left pane and the values for the "VirusProtect6" key will appear in the right pane. You will first add a new value to the "VirusProtect6" key, then to the "ClientConfig" subkey.
- Press F5 again, then down-arrow to select "Add Value", and press Enter.
- In the "Enter new value name" box, type:
PreferedProtocol
Enter exactly as shown, with the "Prefered" portion misspelled.
- In the Select Data Type box, select DWORD and press Enter.
- In the Enter the data box, type 0 for IP or 1 for IPX, and press Enter.
- Press F5 and the down arrow to select Open a subkey, or press the O key, and then press Enter.
- Scroll down the subkey list with the down-arrow and select ClientConfig. Then press Enter.
- Press F5, then the down-arrow to select Add Value, and press Enter.
- In the Enter new value name box, type:
PreferedProtocol
Enter exactly as shown, with the "Prefered" portion misspelled.
- In the Select Data Type box, select DWORD and press Enter.
- In the Enter the data box, type 0 for IP and 1 for IPX and press Enter.
- Press ESC to exit VPREGEDT.NLM.
- At the System Console, type LOAD VPSTART and press Enter to restart Symantec AntiVirus on the server.
