How to verify that a Symantec corporate antivirus product is set to scan all files

Question/Issue:
You need to confirm that Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is set to scan all files.


Solution:


Before you begin: This document applies only to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition and Symantec Client Security. If you use one of the Norton AntiVirus or Norton AntiVirus Professional 200x line of products, such as Norton AntiVirus 2006, read How to configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files.


The default setting for a Symantec corporate antivirus product is to scan all files.

Confirm the setting in Symantec AntiVirus
You can confirm the setting on a single computer or on unmanaged clients.

To confirm the setting in Symantec AntiVirus
  1. Start Symantec AntiVirus.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • In Symantec AntiVirus 9.x or later, click Configure> File System Auto-Protect.
    • In Symantec AntiVirus 8.x, click Configure> File System Realtime Protection.
  3. Under File Types, ensure that All Files is checked.
  4. Under Options, if "Exclude selected files and folders" is checked, continue to the next step.
    If "Exclude selected files and folders" is unchecked, the program is configured to scan all files.
  5. Click Exclusions.
  6. Examine the files and folders that are excluded to ensure that they are appropriate for your environment.


Confirm the setting in Symantec System Center
You can use Symantec System Center to control this setting on servers and managed clients.

To confirm the setting for managed clients
  1. Start the Symantec System Center, and unlock the server group.
  2. Right-click the server or server group.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • In Symantec AntiVirus 10.x, click All Tasks> Symantec AntiVirus> Client Auto-Protect Options.
    • In Symantec AntiVirus 8.x or 9.x, click All Tasks> Symantec AntiVirus> Client Real Time Protection Options.
  4. Under File Types, ensure that All Files is checked.
  5. Under Options, if "Exclude selected files and folders" is checked, continue to the next step.
    If "Exclude selected files and folders" is unchecked, the program is configured to scan all files.
  6. Click Exclusions.
