"Error: LiveUpdate encountered one or more errors. Return code = 4" in LiveUpdate status in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
| Situation: | LiveUpdate fails when run by the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager with the following error in the LiveUpdate status: LiveUpdate encountered one or more errors. Return code = 4 |
| Solution: | This error can be caused for different reasons including, but not limited to, the following:
- Internet access is being blocked by a proxy server <Please see the Technical Information section of this document for steps to configure Liveupdate for use with a proxy>
- Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager is trying to contact via an internal LiveUpdate server and the URL supplied to LiveUpdate is not correct.
- Enhanced Security is enabled in Internet Explorer <Please see the Technical Information section of this document for steps to disable IE Enhanced Security>
- A firewall that requires authentication to get to the internet is used.
- Re-register Liveupdate <Please see the Technical Information section of this document for steps to Re-register Liveupdate>

How to disable IE Enhanced Security for 2000/2003:
- Launch the Windows Control Panel.
- Open Add or Remove programs and click the Add/Remove Windows Components button.
- Disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration option, and then click Next.
- Upon completion of the Windows Components Wizard, click Finish. You may need to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
How to disable IE Enhanced Security for 2008:
- Launch Server Manager (Start --> Administrative Tools --> Server Manager)
- In the section titled "Security Information" select the option to Configure IE ESC
- Select Off for both Administrators and Users
To re-register the manager without reinstalling the software, follow the steps below:
- Open a command prompt browse to:
C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin
- Type lucatalog -update and press Enter.
- Run LiveUpdate to verify that there are no errors.
