How to Redirect AOL, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Googletalk IM Clients to IM Manager Using a Windows Hosts File
Question/Issue:
IM Clients sometimes need to be redirected to IM Manager using hosts file entries. This typically occurs during testing when the DNS entries have not been created to redirect the IM clients to IM Manager.
Solution:
1) Edit the hosts file on the client IM machine.
Below are the hosts file entries that need to be added for AIM, MSN and Yahoo:
To edit, open the hosts file in Note. The hosts file is located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\.
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost

Change the text <IP address of your relay server> to the primary IP address of your IM Manager server.
Change the text <Secondary IP Address of your relay server> to the second IP address of your IM Manager server.
Change the text <hostname provisioned by AOL for AIM 6.X> to the hostname that you asked Symantec to provision for AIM 6.X support.
NOTE: See the IM Manager implementation guide for details on the use of multiple IP addresses and AIM 6.X provisioning.
2) Exit out of all IM clients.
3) Perform the following command to flush the DNS:
4) Start up the IM client.
