Question/Issue:
This article describes the support for various IM clients with IM Manager.


Solution:
Symantec provides two levels of support for IM clients with IM Manager:

• Fully Supported
• Limited Support.

Fully Supported

All features and functions of Fully Supported IM client versions are expected to work with IM Manager. Any known limitations of a fully supported IM client are documented in the release notes or other knowledge base articles. Symantec has made efforts in testing and otherwise that ensures that the Fully Supported IM clients function with IM Manager.

Fully Supported IM clients are specified by IM client version and operating system and IM network protocol type.

Symantec will take inquiries on all aspects of the Fully Supported IM clients.

Defects filed against IM Manager with respect to Fully Supported IM clients are handled according to the standard defect handling process.

Limited Support

Select features of Limited Support IM client versions are expected to work with IM Manager including:
• One to one messaging
• Buddy list management
• Logon
• Stability of IM Manager
  
Any known limitations of a limited support IM client are documented in the release notes or other knowledge base articles. Symantec has made limited or no efforts in testing and otherwise that ensures that the Limited Support IM clients function with IM Manager.

Limited Support IM clients are specified by IM client version and operating system and IM network protocol type.

Symantec will take inquiries on all aspects of the Limited Support IM clients.

Defects filed for the features listed above against IM Manager with respect to Limited Support IM clients are handled on a case by case basis. Resolution of these defects may include a recommendation to use a Fully Supported IM client.

Issues or questions for features other than those listed above are handled on a case by case basis. Resolution may include a recommendation to use a Fully Supported IM client.

NOTE: All IM clients are Windows based unless otherwise noted.

NOTE: IM Manager does not support any other wireless client as they generally connect directly to the public IM cloud

Clients No Longer Supported by IM Services.

The Instant Messaging networks have stopped support for the following IM clients. These IM clients should not be used with IM Manager and are not supported for use with IM Manager.

AOL:

• AIM 6.5 (AOL has depracated support for Domain Configuration Redirection)

MSN:

• Versions older than MSN Messenger v.5.0
• Versions older than Windows Messenger v.4.7.2009
• Versions older than Windows Messenger v.4.7.2009 not used solely to access a corporate Exchange instant messaging environment
• Versions older than MSN Messenger 6.01 for Mac
• Version 8.X of Windows Messenger.

Yahoo!:

• Versions older than Yahoo! Messenger 5.0
• Version older then Mac Yahoo! Messenger 2.5.3

ICQ:


• Versions older than ICQ 6.0

Support for Mobile IM clients

At this time IM Manger does not support any mobile IM clients. The main reason for this is that there is no way to route the IM traffic into a corporate network into an IM Manager server. The exception to this is an OCS mobile client. These OCS mobile clients will connect to an OCS Access Proxy. The Access Proxy then forwards the communication to an OCS front end server where IM Manager is installed.

At this time there is no timeframe to support specific mobile OCS IM clients. If you need this support please contact your Symantec Sales Representative or open a Symantec Technical Support Ticket.

NON-SUPPORTED PLATFORMS

Platforms that are not supported have not been tested by Symantec and there is no guarantee of the behavior with the IM Manager software. Symantec Technical Support will aid with issues involving non supported platforms up to the point at which knowledge of, or access to, the non supported platform component limits further troubleshooting and assistance. Symantec is not responsible for resolving software defects directly related to non supported platform.

Use of not supported 3rd party IM Clients may cause unexpected behavior with IM Manager stability. Issues or questions for IM Clients other than those listed above are handled on a case by case basis. Resolution may include a recommendation to use a Fully Supported IM client.
