Installing the content filtering license for Symantec Mail Security 4.x for Microsoft Exchange

Question/Issue:
You installed a trialware or an unlicensed copy of Symantec Mail Security 4.x for Microsoft Exchange. You purchased a license and received the content licensing certificate. You need to know how to install the content license for Symantec Mail Security.

Solution:
To install a content license, it is first necessary to obtain a content license key file using the 11-digit product serial number found on the content licensing certificate. To obtain the content license key file, enter the 11-digit product serial number in the "Serial number:" field on the Licensing and Registration web page.

Note: This license is to provide access to download new virus definitions and program updates. Symantec Mail Security 4.x for Microsoft Exchange does not require a license to scan messages with content filtering.

A content license key file is mailed to the address specified when you complete the registration form. After you receive the license file install using the following procedure.

To install the license
  1. Do one of the following:
    • On a single server, open the Symantec Mail Security Web interface.
    • For a server group, in the left pane of the Symantec Mail Security console, expand Global or a server group.
  2. In the left pane, click Tasks.
  3. Select Install/Renew License.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • For a single server, click Install License.
    • For a server group, click Install Licenses
  5. Click Browse.
  6. Navigate to the location where you detached the license key file. This is the file sent to you by email. Double-click to open the file.
  7. Do one of the following;
    • Click Install on a single server.
    • Click Install Licenses for a server group.

A License installation status dialog box appears. When the status indicates that the license installation was successful, your Symantec Mail Security product is successfully licensed.

Note: Symantec's licensing tool compresses or "zips" license files to make them smaller and quicker to download. These zipped files are not self-extracting and require third-party software such as WinZip or PKZip to open. If you are unsure as to whether you need zip utility software, visit the WinZip or PKZip Web site to download an evaluation copy. For instructions on how to download and unzip files, read the document How to zip and unzip files. Do no open the extracted .slf file. Opening this file can result in the file being corrupted.
